I think a JCC is pretty different from an actual church. JCC's are meant to be community centers and, at least the one near me, is open to anyone. Religious buildings have the problem of being legally protected from ADA.

It's honestly the same in the US. You can drink a beer in public. I think those laws are probably mostly used to harass homeless people, or selectively enforced at like playgrounds or outside businesses.

Your question doesn't even make sense because it's not at all true that Bill Gates gets extra hate, I think people rightly hate on all the Billionaires. I very rarely even hear about Bill Gates, more often it's Elon Musk or Bezos ... or Taylor Swift lately.

My point is that we can and should criticize any billionaire no matter their philanthropy, noone becomes a billionaire by accident and it is shameful to be one.

I don't want to help spread pro-billionaire sentiment by just being "oh yay Bill Gates" for donating the money he got from intellectual thievery and violating anti-trust laws.

🤷🏻‍♂️ Pay attention, look for it and you will see this argument come up a lot. Trickle-down economics is a similar idea, and that was a national talking point for years.

People absolutely say that, "philanthrocapitalism" is a nerdy word for it it, but that basic argument comes up in a lot of contexts ... pay attention.

It's pretty comparable to a car in medium distances. SF to LA is about 7 hours by car, maybe 10 hours by train. The extra time is well worth the benefit of being able to just relax the whole trip.

Amtrak is really nice for medium-distance trips. I've gone from San Francisco to LA, to Seattle, to Denver. You get one overnight, no boarding hassle, can bring on a TON of luggage, and if you're a geography nerd like me you get great views of the landscapes. I work on the train when I do this, so I don't lose vacation days.

I mean, surfing was invented in Hawai'i and historically everyone did surf.

I agree that Vegas shouldn't exist, but the price tag makes sense? It's in California, there are probably a lot of environmental measures that will be taken during the construction process which I fully support happening.

It's not pessimism, it's criticism. The fact that you think hope/pessimism has anything to do with these issues would be extremely telling if you hadn't already described yourself as a liberal.

I'm not a Republican nor do I keep livestock, but I'm a biologist and death is part of life. People only seem to care when it's a pet dog or cat, but we kill animals for various reasons very regularly.

Are you vegan? If not, the animals providing your food are treated similar or worse than this.
