  • Unless impartiality under other systems can be demonstrated I wouldn't say that's a feature of capitalism.

In fact it was under democratic capitalism that the idea of an independent and impartial 4th estate was created.

Concentration of powers seems to be a global phenomenon regardless of system - in fact the capitalist societies seem to be the last bastions of such journalism.

I don't have any answers, just observations.

You can't unroll the internet, mobile computing or bite sized info-entertainment.

You may be able to regulate algorithms that promote addictive behaviours.

Good journalism needs better protections and incentive structures, but it's still trying to figure it out.

Let's hope it does before we get entertained to death.

  • The term media is now diffuse, and actual journalism sparse. And so unless you're an avid critical consumer of diverse sources you have little idea of what model is approaching reality.

Most big players, with fox news showing the way to profit from it, have nearly abdicated their responsibility to judge truth claims.

Being breathlessly first in a way that's pleasant to your demographic's ear is more important than being right.

  • Inertia will keep a train going for a while, as the engine dies.

The people that are now on lemmy were the heaviest users. The ones that bought 5 different apps to improve their experience and figure out which one they preferred : the mods, the creators, etc.

Have they all left Reddit completely? Probably not, but now they split their time. And stats say the proportion on Lemmy is increasing.

We now have an opportunity not only replace but contribute in the creation of something new - new mechanics, new rules and more.

Reddit is tired and has been for a while, Lemmy developers are building the Reddit they always wanted, and are innovating at breakneck speed.

Simple things like Top by 1, 6, 12 hours which we now have here, was badly needed in Reddit but they were too busy trying to shoehorn video and flairs.

  • Unless you provide for personhood to those statistical inference models the analogy falls flat.

We're talking about a corporation using copyrighted data to feed their database to create a product.

If you were ever in a copyright negotiation you'd see that everything is relevant: intended use, audience size, sample size, projected income, length of usage, mode of transmission, quality etc.

They've negotiated none of it and worst of all they commercialised it. I'd consider that being in real trouble.

  • Elon maybe have done too many drugs because his discourse is completely different to a decade ago.

He may always have been an asshole but he had some sense of proportion, in his public pronouncements at least.

He either dropped the mask, or he has fucked himself up somehow. Possibly a bit of both.
