  • This is going to depend enormously on what your body clock is like, and how flexible it is. Mine is extremely flexible and infinitely reconfigurable so I find shift work is a doddle and I dont get jetlag at all. I'm on a shift right now, and loving it. But some people really struggle with anything that even slightly messes with their natural circadian rythyms and will really struggle with working shifts and it can actually seriously impatc their health. Such people should never be forced into shift work

  • He wouldnt stop drinking. I knew that when I left him, and still know its the reason now. Miraculously he hasnt drunk himself to death by now ( a bit over ten years later) and I think he may now be in recovery, I hope so for his sake. I found a far far better partner 8 months after we split

  • It is more likely for women than it is for men - male sexual orientation tends to be more fixed. Men who "become gay" were likely always predisposed to it or bisexual at the very least. The causative biological mechanisms for male and female sexual orientation are different, and in the case of women, less clear

  • Bunnings or Mitre 10 usually have sunglasses that are also safety glasses for about $15 a pair. Just bought a couple of pairs of 3M ones there, they are rated to block 99.9% of UV, not sure if they're polarised though. They seem to last a couple of years

  • Two books that helped me understand the world better particularly when it comes to human behaviour. Both are terrific reads although can be difficult at times for different reasons, but strongly recommend both of them;

    1. The Blank Slate: The Modern Denial of Human Nature by Steven Pinker is a great oversight of the science behind the biology of human (and animal) behaviour, explaining that it is a mix of nature and nurture (but leaning towards nature).
    2. Without Conscience: The Disturbing World of the Psychopaths Among Us by Robert D Hare is a disturbing but easy read, and explains some of the worst of human behaviour, not just in the criminal justice system but also in politics and business
  • Its a perfectly reasonable option for those that for whatever reason are unable to meet their needs by more conventional/ socially acceptable means. I do not make use of sex worker services currently but if the need arose in the future I would not rule it out, and would not look down on anyone else for doing so (as long as trafficing is not involved)

  • I use Strava, and overall I am happy with it but for the lack of one feature that really bugs me - it has no option to set it up to do a one button start. Currently to record a ride or other activity I have to press record, then press Start - which doesnt always start recording.

    Having the ability to set your app to do one touch activity recording would be a feature Strave does not have and therefore an advantage

  • Do you know of a test that has these axes, or more? I would be very interested to take it if so, and I am inclined to agree with you about the political compass test and others like it - they dont capture the true complexity of most people's political views - I'm all over the place myself

  • A way of rewarding people for outstandingly good posts or comments, beyond just a simple upvote. I've seen some really great contributions on here that stand out above the run of the mill, and it would be nice to be able to give them some extra recognition, even at a cost to myself

    Flairs on a community by community basis would be nice too
