  • While he remained in prison, yes. Certainly failing to imprison him earlier didnt work, did it

And talking about punishment completely misses the point. Sentencing needs to about risk management, not punishment. He was clearly a very serious risk, multiple people could see that and said as much, the judge failed to manage that risk adequately by incapacitating him until he no longer posed a risk and could be treated/ rehabilitated (if indeed he could be treated/ rehabilitated at all which is another discussion)

Punishment by itself achieves nothing, offenders like this cannot be deterred. And sometimes incapacitation is all we have got

  • That'd be fine depending on who they go into coalition with - and if tha's what they intend to do, they should say as much on their site.

That said, its an important policy area not just to me but to a lot of the public (second most important issue in surveys of late if I recall rightly) and I think it would be in their own interests to commit to a policy direction so that people know what they are voting for

  • I'm a terminally online policy nerd and am not voting for them - and where the hell are their crime/ law and order/ justice/ policing / corrections policies? I'm not voting for them or anyone until I see those thank you very much. I do like the unrelated policies I do see on their site, but without those crucial policy areas addressed and in some detail I cannot put my vote their way

  • I used to have this bundled with Youtube Music. The Youtube Music app was possibly the worst Android app I have ever used, slow, unstable, buggy and flaky as all hell. Ditched it for Deezer which has a terrific if slightly disorganised catalogue and a far better app

  • Yes, I agree that locking people up for non-violent crimes is generally a poor use of resources, that said it is fairly rare for people to be imprisoned in NZ now for non-violent offending only, not that I'm saying it never happens, but it is uncommon.

I do think the use of a computer model is an innovation worth looking at, and I think that people here will be more open to the idea now given the recent performance of the judiciary. I would want the model to be programmed to be highly risk averse however, even if that ends up costing more in prison resource

  • The judiciary need to err on the side of caution a LOT more than they do currently. There needs to be a far bigger focus on risk management in the justice system. We have done this very successfully in aviation, we have done it for food safety, we have done so in many other areas of governance, and yes, it has come at a cost, but also has saved many lives and averted much misery. Yes, we would need a lot more jail space, but that is a cost I would be prepared to pay in increased taxes.

  • Is this actually a quote from one of the news stories? Just wondering if so, as it seems completely believable and I would not be the slightest bit surprised if it was true

Edit just read story linked below, and it is a quote from that

You're absolutely right, we should have seen it coming. More precisely the judge responsible for sentencing him should have seen it coming. That is what he is paid for

  • My current phone is a Samsung. I bought it because its not made in China and has the features I needed - expandable storage and a headphone jack at the right price

I dont care about brands. I'll buy anything not made in China if it does the job and its not too expensive. Currently Samsung is the only brand that fits the bill as far as I know (things may have changed since I bought my last phone)

  • Samsung Galaxy A31, running Android 12. Its far from the latest or most high end tech but its a tough old bird, and does all I ask of it without complaint. Good screen even with a few cracks, 128Gb memory which I've supplemented with a 500Gb SD card for all the music I have downloaded from Deezer. Battery usually lasts two days or more at a stretch. Camera is frankly better than I need. And best of all its got a headphone jack, an absolute necessity. Only downsides are that it wont upgrade to Android 13, 12 is as far as it'll go, and the USB-C socket is getting a bit knackered. Not bad for an almost three year old phone, hope to get another couple of years out of it

I also have a small budget phone I bought overseas to use as a Wifi hotspot, thing called a Dash L4 LTE. I'm now going to press it into service as a music player when swimming. Its small and light, but grossly underpowered, and only runs Android 7, doubt it'd be capable of more. I've put a 64Gb SD card in it again for music, it'll do the job, but i certainly wouldnt want to use it as my primary phone
