  • I've been using Linux (also Arch, several years, happily!) since 1996 and for a long time I've wondered why every software I run gets access to every file I have.

Flatpak is one way to fix that.

is available as a package or in the AUR

Oh okay, I see. You don't perhaps care about programs reading the files of other programs. Well, that's fine, everybody has their own threat models.

  • I mostly disagree with that. Cocooning up into a terminally online person makes one's life worse, not better.

Straight up abusive parents are another thing of course. But even then those kids need sheltering, not the internet.

  • Yeah.... it seems to me that one of the problems is actually that we kinda threw organized religion into the trash bin and replaced it with .... nothing. So is it weird that people fill that void with also total garbage?

Perhaps there was a reason why only socities with strong organized religions survived to this point?

  • Yep, that's why the only way to be a good parent nowadays is to not give your kids smart phones or computers of their own. There was a time when it was kinda ok for them to have those devices, but that time is permanently in the past.

  • Sure, cooperation is clearly an evolutionary trait also, and seems like a much more useful one than greed. It seems that socities need a bit of both to thrive, or do you have examples of known societies that worked primarily on co-operation, even for the leaders?

  • Are you sure it wasn’t “putain de cOnnard” (I.e. f*cking *sshole) though?

Of course I'm not sure. I've studied french for 6 years, practiced it alone for a few years, and real french pronunciation confuses the hell out of me.

  • I heard an authentic "putain de canard" from a parisian lady who was ascending from the metro and there was a bunch of pigeons on the stairs. Which when translated to my native finnish was "vitun ankat" (fucking ducks), which I thought at the time as being the funniest shit I've heard in french.
