  • In this comic xkcd used the equation: half your age + 7 https://imgs.xkcd.com/comics/dating_pools.png

It's fun to reference but it's not a hard rule. The fact that you are thinking it over means that you are probably in a healthy mindset to at least go on the date and feel it out. You have your daughter batting for you! You got this!

  • Sorry I had to run and didn't get to wrap up my thought.

I don't really mind if a post isn't a perfect fit. I try to give the benefit of the doubt. If we had hundreds of really strong posts every day then I imagine I would be more strict. Lemmy is small so at least we can be friendly and supportive in decisions that aren't clear cut.

  • This post is certainly outside of the norm of shower thoughts. I think in general people want posts that score a little higher on the scale of funny and interesting. Taking the sidebar strictly:

    • Does this thought pop into people's heads? yeah, probably
    • Is it lighthearted? Not really, but its friendly.
    • Is it clever? No
    • Is it true? Yes
  • Don't worry about this at all, this is actually a great opportunity.

You have a full year where you are a very competitive intern/research applicant because most of your schooling is behind you.

Not only that, but you can probably take an internship in the spring or fall semester when everyone else is in school. You can get some really primo internships. University of Waterloo is a school you probably never heard of but you find their students in all the big tech companies in the spring and fall because the school pushes them to take a semester off(I think). It's a great strategy.

  • Very well said. Everything good in life, will have some aspects that you (the global 'you') won't like.

Lemmy is a huge improvement over corporate social media. Maybe it has some ideologies you don't like here, but it beats an algorithm that secretly manipulates you.

If I use a FOSS product, then I try to pay for it, even if it's not perfect. For example, Firefox gets a lot of well deserved hate but without it I'm not sure there would be a realistic FOSS browser.

  • I think we are very much in agreement. I don't read a lot of what goes on in Showerthoughts. I would rather let people sort out their differences. Several users reported the thread, meaning that they wanted a moderator to take action.

If someone prefers zero moderation then they will need to look outside of Lemmy.world.
