  • No, the hardware died. Just randomly shut down a few times until it didn't boot nor POST anymore. The most it could do is spin a fan and output 5V to USB.

  • I don't know what you guys are talking about?
I've used an old laptop with Windows 11 (just because I wasn't supposed to) which had Core 2 Duo T7500 (upgraded from T7100), 4GB of DDR2 RAM, GeForce 8600M GT, but with an SSD rather than HDD. Pretty usable with that thing.

Unfortunately it broke, but I think it would still be just as good.

  • otherwise I fell bad for my bro

Not sure if you meant to write "feel", but it is too late now.
Maybe you should get in touch 😏

  • Hmm, that's one community I haven't seen here yet.

  • People are supposed to be green, soft and fluffy?
So, grinch or a green furry.

  • Eh. My opinion on this is "Your room, your walls." Unless the kid decides to start drilling holes or otherwise destroying the wall, it's fine. It can be painted over later on.

Or, it may be a good opportunity for washable paint.

  • Reminds me of this gem: "Download now"

    Download what?

  • But even then, theoretically, even if not default, could you not just block the first request to HTTPS site causing fallback to HTTP and then redirect elsewhere for the purpose of nice lock icon?

  • Hard to tell, guesstimate €1,500.

I really only download music, mostly individual songs. I use sites like himovies.to for movies, and then if I like something enough, I buy a DVD, if available.
And some few "mod apks", which yes, are a bit shady. I don't know how to do that myself, so I just run them through VirusTotal and hope for the best if it's all green (false negatives). Stuff like KineMaster because I am procrastinating to learn using Kdenlive, MLUSB Mounter and some games.

I haven't purchased any media or software (excl. donations) that doesn't come on a physical medium.

  • I even put a case on a rugged phone. It does look a bit ridiculous.
I have one older phone that feels really nice without case, but I too put it in one, a wallet case, because it's a secondary device, and thus is often in worse places. Possibly even a pocket with keys.

I've used phones without cases before, and never broke one. However, I did get to find out that one of them, new enough to have USB-C, had plastic camera lenses. Archos 55DC, to shame it.

  • While at it, they could also add option to decrease minimum volume. Often it's too loud, at least for me. One dumb phone I planned to use as MP3 player has this same issue.

Actually, I feel like it's most phones. Thankfully the music app I use has equalizer to tune it down.
Hell, even many separate music players. Only stuff with analog volume control is basically always OK.

  • The biggest issue is probably the MediaTek chipsets. Unlike Qualcomm, they don't provide the source code.

I only went with MTK based device for manual band selection. It can be done with root, but the only app for it I could find is network signal guru, and I am not sure about how trustworthy it is to give root access to.

  • I'd still be using my 2017 Moto G5s Plus if it weren't for the dead battery and mostly gone (soldered-on) USB port.

It was fine with PixelExperience ROM, and I am sure I could still get something good onto it. But, it is what it is, an e-waste slab. I've run the battery down to 2 hours of standby time and the micro USB only works with very few cables at this point.

I do miss the 16:9 and separate navigation via the front fingerprint scanner.
