  • That makes no sense at all though, this would be the dumbest way possible to do that. If you're going to leak something you don't include a paper trail of high level people discussing classified information in ways that are neither legal nor secure. And especially to The Atlantic, they would never be the choice if this was intentional for reasons that should be obvious.

  • One of the driving forces behind this phenomena is that business types value having that reoccurring revenue on the books more than "normal" revenue. If you have two companies with identical revenue but one of them gets it from customers locked in on a subscription, that company will be valued significantly higher. If you're an exec or a big investor who owns a lot of stock in a company then you're effectively incentivized to push the company towards that subscription based reoccurring revenue model because it will boost the stock price and make you richer.

  • The weird thing is he did get an essay that explained everything published by the NYT after the fact once it blew up in his face. He could have just shared all of that ahead of time instead of blindsiding everyone with his surprise change of heart and at least minimized the anger. You would think an experienced politician like him would know better but for some reason he did it in just about the worst possible way he could have done it.

  • As an American, this is exactly correct. The last time I tried to take Amtrak the train literally did not show up and they told us they had no way to contact it and didn't know where it was. After waiting many hours with no change in status I finally gave up. The last time I actually rode Amtrak it was multiple hours late and cost about the same as a plane ticket.

  • Not an expert but I do have a well. You definitively don't want to be drinking more lead than the EPA limit. I would get a filtration system installed ASAP and not drink from that well until it is installed, and especially don't let children drink the leaded water because they are more susceptible to brain damage. If anyone has been drinking this water it would be a good idea to get tested for lead exposure ASAP.

  • Waking up to find my partner dead. I used to leave for work while she was still deeply asleep so every morning before I kissed her goodbye I would have that moment of terror that when my lips touch her she would be cold.

  • There's a variety of steps necessary before building begins. Things like getting utilities run to the property, getting permits, etc. If you're the property owner who has those things ready to go a developer is likely going to choose you over others who still need that prep work done. You can also probably just agree to a smaller cut of the final product. If you're willing to give up some value and make it more profitable for the developer they will prefer you over someone they will make less money from.

  • Yes, exactly. There is potentially another trial, its not double jeopardy because a mistrial is not the same thing as a not guilty verdict. Its only when you are unanimously found not guilty that you definitively can not be put on trial again.
