  • The article doesn't say just how much more expensive heat pumps are when comparing to gas furnaces. I live in one of the states at the top of that picture and just replaced my 20+ year old furnace and AC compressor. I specifically asked about heat pumps and they were reluctant to even price it out for me. It was over twice the cost. In addition they said the area I live in would almost certainly require an aux heat source, which they recommended gas for because direct electric heat is so horribly inefficient. I ended up going with the 98.5% efficient gas furnace, which also came with incentives and rebates from the power company.

  • You can do this for yourself at Volcano national Park in Hawai'i. If they still let people into the lava field. We got close enough to poke the new lava with sticks. It's tolerable unless you make the mistake of standing directly over it. Also if you go take flashlights, it's no fun trying to navigate a lava field by moonlight.

  • Obama should have appointed Garland anyway since Congress was refusing to give "advice and consent" as required by the constitution. Much like a recess appointment, but McConnell made sure Congress never recessed either, just to avoid that.

  • In the US, appliance bulbs are exempt from the new law. Which by the way mandates a lumens per watt threshold, it doesn't explicitly ban incandescent bulbs. If someone could come up with an incandescent that meets the requirement they are free to sell as many as they can make.
