  • I'm so sorry to hear that. I hope you find relief someday. FWIW, one of the developers of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (an evidence-based talk therapy) has a similar story and ACT has helped him live a better life despite his tinnitus.

  • That MSN article has some numbers that don't add up.

The news is that the streaming giant is accountable for over half of the 4.4 million subscriptions lost in Spain alone in recent months...

The analysis firm asserted that 1.6 million users have left the home of series like Stranger Things overall...

The online streaming service had reported that it had added nine million new users, bringing its total number of subscribers to 247.15 million, during the most recent fiscal disclosure of data.

Ignoring the fact that 1.6m isn't "over half" of 4.4m, the last paragraph says that they added 9m new users. Am I reading this wrong?

  • Well said. I'm not going to be a fairweather-ethical-decision-maker. Every time I make a right choice (and I decide what's right for me) I'm rebelling against the machine of marketing and convenience. In fact, often the more inconvenient it is, the more confident I am in my decision.

  • I agree with everything you said, but I wouldn't recommend any book by Johann Hari. Chasing the Scream is a powerful read, but Hari is a chronic plagiarist and liar, and everything he writes should be looked at with heavy skepticism.

  • To add some more info:

    • Sample size was 295 Kenyan villages consisting of 73,511 individuals with a control group of 11,000.
    • Only individuals over 18 received payments. Individuals at least 15y.o. were told they would begin receiving payments once they turned 18.
    • Money was distributed via mobile cash transfer, to which 96% of Kenyans have access, and which doesn't require a bank account
    • Payments averaged $0.75 per day at a time that maize consumption per capita was $0.60 per day.
    • The lump sum payment was equal to 2 years of monthly payments, reduced by 8%.
  • Are you asking if it's so depressing that it becomes uplifting? Not exactly what I meant. The message of the movie is that we're all in this together. Of course we should be doing everything possible to minimize climate change, but when shit hits the fan, you can either hoard money, guns and food, or you can be present with the people who really matter.

I live in a city that was (rightfully) torn apart after George Floyd was murdered. I suddenly became afraid of my neighbors. Who could I trust? How would I protect my family? Would I be forced to choose between protecting my parents and protecting my partner and my dogs? How would I protect my food and valuables? Would I have to get a gun?

That last question snapped me out of my delusion. I refuse to be controlled by fear. When things get bad, I will not be someone who slams the door on my neighbors. I won't fucking shoot someone because they need food and I have food. I will share what I have and we'll work together.

  • I'm not an expert but I have spent several years organizing in my field. Legally it only takes 2 workers to form a bargaining unit. It's normal to see a union as unnecessary when you're satisfied with your working conditions. Unfortunately without a union there's nothing protecting those benefits you enjoy, and they're often the first thing employers target when they're looking to cut costs. Without a union your employer has no obligation to consult with you before, for example, switching to a cheaper health insurance or freezing bonuses.

A union contract lets you decide which issues you want to weigh in on. Don't mind working holidays? Leave it out of the contract. Want regular raises? Put it in the contract.

Contrary to popular belief, you won't pay any dues until you have a contract that you feel is worth what you're paying. Sometimes people say, "I paid dues but the union never did anything for me." Nearly every time I've heard this the person A. worked in a union that's been around for a long time, and negotiated major improvements before they started the job, and/or B. did not actively participate by attending meetings or voting on contracts. It's like saying, "I didn't vote in my local elections, and the city council never did anything for me."

Of course there's incompetence and corruption, just like in government, but I rarely hear people argue that the solution to government corruption is to stop having elections. Unions are literally the only reliable way for workers to improve their working conditions.
