    • Prime because I already have Amazon Prime (my wife uses it; I rarely do -- 4900 JPY annually).
    • Magellan TV + Curiosity stream which I occasionally watch (which cost me a bit over 6000 JPY last year, so probably something like $45 a year in USD?)
    • U-Next because my phone provider sends me codes for free usage. I never actually use it, though.

    That's it for us.

  • Unless the driver tosses it in neutral, the engine is also still doing work even if keeping the car's speed constant whereas when the diver jumps, I think he stops being a part of that system he will slow down compared to the van, right? How much this affects the landing of the jump depends upon speed, wind speed, etc.

  • I actually got board, got a new HDD, and got linux mint on it. It doesn't seem to have a bootloader installed and trying to install grub2 hasn't changed anything. I'm also pretty disappointed in game support. Maybe I'm missing something, but Steam knows it's on linux and a huge number of games in my library just say they run on windows or windows and mac.

  • I'm finally buying a house and moving with my wife to rural northern Japan, so I can only assume that it will burn down, fall over, and sink into a swamp.

On a more serious note, the US political situation will probably get a lot worse before (and if) it gets better. It still does affect me since I still have to file taxes, still am restricted in investing overseas (thanks, lack of US recognition of Japanese retirement vehicles and punitive policies meant to prevent people investing in certain foreign investments (PFICs)). I still also have investments in the US, qualify for social security when I retire (assuming it still has any money to pay out in another 20ish years), and family living in the US, some of whom I would like to visit again before they pass.

  • I live in Tokyo and see a lot of people, particularly foreigners but also Japanese, complain about loneliness. We mostly use public transit, do not have zoning like that, etc. so it's definitely not a cure-all to do just those two things (not that I think that was what you were saying).

  • That I wanted to throw people into internment camps

I did not remotely say that.

and that I think what Americans did to the Japanese was okay?

Which is closer to what I was asking.

You lead with the assumption that they are "Chinese 'expats'". I don't even know what your quotes on expats are doing there. Your later response was listing names and stating "Well…who could have seen this coming.". To me, that just reads as you saying that Americans with Chinese-sounding names can't be trusted. If that is indeed your position, I think it's an awful, racist one.

  • its new policy interpretation will not include proactively removing content related to neo-Nazis and far-right extremism. But Substack will continue to remove any material that includes “credible threats of physical harm

    Not even removing nazi publications

  • One of my goals after moving is to get another HDD and dual-boot as I transition away. I mostly have to figure out gaming and video editing stuff. I will also probably run WINE just for notepad++ because I can't quit it with the textfx tools (so far as I know, the linux clone was abandoned, sadly).

  • Tons of places do not have bidets. Hell, numerous places here still have squat toilets. I guess they are common in many tourist spots and stations in bigger cities. I have some occasional digestive issues and tend to know where toilets with washlets are in places I frequent.

  • Cookie dough and ice cream scoops

I always just use a spoon (or sometimes two, in the case of portioning cookies) without issue. I never saw the appeal of these. Then again, there are probably people who eat more ice cream and make more cookies than I do.

Definitely agree on the rest. For measuring cups, also pay close attention to how the handle is connected to the body; I've had some that look like a single tack weld was done and they break off in now time.

  • Yeah, seconded. I saw a decent chunk of things in person like I saw on bash.org. People were silly and/or dumb long before friendster, myspace, facebook, etc. and did plenty of shitposting (and just general cringe-y teenage obnoxiousness) on IRC and the like.

  • As an American and former tipped employee, living in a country without tips is so much better. However, there are some groups trying to make tips happen here in Japan. If you get good service, tell the manager or corporate. If you're a regular, give them an actual small gift (this happens anyway because people exchange gifts when they go on vacation and such). If it's a bar employee, buy them a drink. I like this much better.

  • I never worked at a place that made the servers produce all of their cash tips for accounting purposes. I only knew one server who was claiming everything all the time and it was because she was trying to get a home loan and minimum wage wasn't going to cut it (most people seemed to claim enough to make just over minimum wage so that they didn't have to have their paycheck adjusted later).

  • Happened to me last year. I never fully found the root cause, but suspect nvidia drivers may have been an issue. I actually re-partitioned the hdd and put another ubuntu on it to try to fix things. That one booted, but I couldn't un-fuck my old install.

  • Japan used to have 歯黒 (haguro) tooth blackening and those pictures can be a bit strange to me, but I don't necessarily hate it. I can't imagine multiply-coloured teeth, however. For some reason my brain wants to think that is like mold or something. Painted nails don't bother me at all.
