  • In Japan, they're typically for aircon units, but I don't see anything indicating such would be mounted there nor does it look to be an exterior wall for the rest of the unit.

  • I'm from the US and live in Japan and I'd still support it. I don't think it's the solution, but putting all the big ones in time out would at least allow competition and allow finding means to address the real issues (paradox of intolerance, balancing free speech with some way to handle disinformation and the like, and probably more I'm not thinking of).

  • I got some bose bluetooth headphones probably 7-8 years ago at this point and they're still working fine. I hate earbuds, personally, so that was never an option. I do hate having one more thing to charge and possibly die, but the noise canceling is also super helpful so that's fine for me. I've had zero problems with google assistant or anything else, but I'm pretty sure I have it mostly disabled on my phone.

  • I have greatly reduced my consumption, particularly of new products. I've blocked most major socials by DNS in hosts of my PC (lots of japanese businesses still use some as their only way of stating business hours and info and same with updated disaster info, so I don't block on my phone but don't use unless I must). I don't buy from companies who have a record of human rights positions and environmental policies that I disagree with whoever possible.

  • Our on-call software apparently causes iphones to play the same sound as an earthquake alert here in Japan. Coworkers have had some literal ptsd-like experi nces and gotten shocked reactions when it goes off in public (at least by default, the sound is on).

On Android I just get some piddly 'ding' I have to set to retrigger as it won't even wake me up.

  • Nah, it's a legal term. I would guess it's where we get aliens in the outer space concept as the word existed well before. Yeah 13th to 14the century. The spaceman version is from the 1950s (edit: per etymonline)

    1. almost never. Even when I lived and worked in Tokyo, conbini or supermarket was cheaper. It was basically a last resort
    2. I think you accidentally a word? I would typically use the vending machine nearest my office or at the train station. Maybe in front of my apartment when really hung over back in the day.
    3. coke zero or an energy drink
    4. kobini/super. Price.
    5. quick, easy, not necessary to deal with a human, variety, etc.

I am a guy from the US living in Japan for a decade.

  • I hope y'all can relax soon. I don't regret having left the US years ago; the only hard parts are not being able to see some family much (though Skype and the like help) and certain foods that just don't exist here (less of an issue in the UK than Japan), but copycat recipes can get things close.
