  • Oh, I'm sorry, I completely misread that part about "with a real d-pad". Not sure what happened there.

  • Personally though, I’d buy a trackpad only deck (maybe with a real d-pad) but I know I’m in the minority on that one.

I can't understand this. There are a few fans of the original Steam Controller (I have one too from launch of it) and they seem to be okay for the missing d-pad. Maybe if you play games where d-pad is never needed, I can see it. But games like Fighting Games, classic Platformer or anything that requires precise single clicks (even menus, like RPGs) are better with d-pad in my opinion. And if you are a fan of emulation like me, then there is no discussion, a d-pad is a must.

Do you really never use the d-pad?

  • Well, it makes the hardware more complicated to manufacture, more error prone, more bigger, more costly. The software becomes also a little bit more complicated. Maybe they are afraid that trackpads wouldn't appeal to normies, because it looks weird first and most "console" gamers might want to use a "normal" gamepad like handheld, like any other handheld. Trackpads look so different and weird compared to the Switch in example. Being similar to the Switch in the look might be a reason for them to exclude it. But most importantly, it makes it more costly. So, I can see reasons for this.

Having said this, I would never buy a PC handheld without a single trackpad again. I love them (not in the literal sense BTW :D). Compared with good software for input, like Steam Input, they become invaluable.

  • As long as this is optional and can be turned off, I think there are bigger problems right now. Its not optimal off course and it would be better to opt-in. At least there is the option to turn it off.

  • 10 years from now, we get retrospective documentary on other video platforms about the downfall of Google.

  • You have. Download Protonge manually from https://github.com/GloriousEggroll/proton-ge-custom/releases and unpack the archive into "~/.steam/root/compatibilitytools.d/". Each Proton version has its own folder. Restart Steam then you can use Proton GE from there. Its like Wine GE, but optimized for Steam.

And what games are you playing? You can also lookup each game in Protondb as linked before. Protondb is a database of user reports, with often useful information.

  • What games? Which Steam Proton and Wine-GE versions do we talk about?

BTW there is also a Proton GE and you can use it in Steam as well. Just saying. Some games do need a specific Steam Proton version, either an older or newer one, such as Proton Experimental. Some games are only working with Proton GE (or Wine GE).

And you can always lookup if the game works, by looking into reports from Protondb website (user generated).

  • If the Kernel is not signed, then it does not matter. The whole point of signed Kernels is to only execute that specific code. Its not pointless. But besides that, even if you don't like Open Source, nobody said the Anticheat software has to be open source. This is something you implied. I don't think any of the Anticheat companies would Open Source it anyway, so this was not my suggestion at all.

  • Besides your argumentation that open source is less secure, a driver or program does not need to be in the Kernel to work with it. Does it? Kernel level anti cheat systems are available on Windows too, without being in the Windows Kernel. All it needs is a Kernel module to load it separately. Something like the Nvidia proprietary driver. I don't know if this would work for Anticheat.

Back to your point of open source and code around it. Well they code around the proprietary tools too. Reverse engineering stuff is possible. So your argumentation is a bit weak. Open Source means more people are looking into and its actually more secure and up to date (for common and actually developed drivers).

And you don't have to use it, if you don't like. How about letting people give options instead calling something they want or need being useless? It has a use and reason, so its by definition not useless. Instead using Windows, they could use Linux.

  • Classic. I also did the rm -rf once in a wrong directory of a programming project. Luckily it was a subdirectory, so nothing important lost. But it could have easily if I was one hierarchy higher.

I am so much afraid of rm -rf, that I usually go in a directory with cd and rm in current directory those files only. And then I do rmdir on empty directories. I use recursive -r only, with specific directory names included (autocomplete helps). This way, even if I am in the wrong directory, the chance that there is the exact same directory name is a bit lower.

And I often also just switch to graphical filemanager to delete files. Not only that. Sometimes I also just move folder instead deleting, so I have a back up until I'm sure. There is also trash-cli.

  • One way I can imagine it being some certified Linux kernel versions that are accepted and worked together with anticheat creators. That way Valve could use the Kernel in Steam Deck or SteamOS, so any game works out of the box. And other distribution users can just install this Kernel too, if their distributions provide it.

Anyone who don't want to have Kernel level anticheat systems enabled on their system, do not need to install the Kernel. Therefore they are secure against it. But for anyone else who wants it, they can. At least this option would be a compromise.

  • Its only one day, not even a week. But otherwise, yeah, this is pretty much a typical console release day. :D

  • But they are presented and optimized in a different way. Not only for the search engines, but also the way how it affects the human. And in the end (no pun intended BTW), one is talking about KDE specifically, showcases it and goes a bit more indepth. And the other is a very short and simple page, talking about Linux in general with a few key bullet points. So having two different ways is not a bad idea actually.

  • Agree with you as well. Anything that enhances or adds new functionality wouldn't be part of a pro upgrade of the same. I feel like Nintendo tried desperately on the Switch 2 to bring new features, that could have been developed and thought off after they scrapped the Pro idea. So they came up with some software features like video streaming and an upgraded controller with mouse support.

  • Or just because they are used to it and don't want to learn a new package manager and all its features and quirks. Would be a shame though. Everyone should!

  • I still don't get Docker. Can we see it as a universal package format that works across all systems, kind of? Well in that regard, we also have JavaScript based applications for the web browser and Web Assembly to run locally too.

  • Well a comment like this will not help in your case, calling people idiots is not nice. Most on Linux sub don't like Windows, you should expect this. No need to get furious about random internet points. I also don't like Windows, but wish you best luck with it. At least you are using Linux on it. Just ignore people who hate YOU for that.

  • You would be surprised by how many people buy a new computer, just because Windows end support. Most are not aware of Linux or think its a complicated geek system that only hackers use, because they read some weird comments about and from Linux users. At this time, campaigns like these are needed.
