As a parent it is truly unthinkable how anyone could disown their children over this kind of thing. I literally cannot fathom doing that to the people I love the most in this world.
Skyrim is a terrible example TBH. That game has been released and rereleased for full price over and over and over again on every platform under the sun. It barely ever even goes on sale.
I loved Digg back in the day. I had a reddit account too, but preferred Digg by a lot. Then the enshittification of Digg via v4 came along and I hopped wholesale over to reddit and never looked back.
Mine is that I have used Jerboa since I joined Lemmy a couple months ago. It's improved a lot, and even in its latest iteration is nowhere near as polished and nice as sync. It was an easy decision to switch.
Lemmy needs both content generators and content consumers. Not everyone needs to do both if that isn't what motivates them to come to the site.
I don't really love comparing to reddit because what reddit became isn't what I hope for lemmy, but to make the point... What percentage of people do you think made content on reddit? I'd guess it was a fraction of a single percent.
I've always wanted to ask someone who is into doing it. Since I've got you here, what satisfaction do you derive from posting outright lies and falsehoods on the internet?
That's not what the majority of people bitching that Sync is bad simply because it's not FOSS would have you believe.
The controversy is just silly to me. I didn't hesitate for a second to pay for the app. I've spent literally thousands of hours using Sync for reddit. $20 is nothing for that.
FOSS is great and all. But the attitude that everything should just be free no matter what is exactly why the internet turned into the data mining ad supported hellhole it is today. I am very willing to pay for things I spend time using. I honestly don't understand thinking any other way.
I imagine this is the case in some fields. I'd guess programming? Having no option for an office is hard.
I'm not actively searching for a job right now but I'm near a fairly large city and a pretty solid majority of what I've seen are hybrid right now. But again, near a bigger city and also largely looking at medium or larger companies.
For those of us who really like Sync, we really like Sync and are willing to pay for it. I've tried the other apps, they're not bad but they aren't as good. For me. Others may have different opinions and that is fine for them.
I'm not sitting here trying to tell everyone else that what they like doesn't make sense. I'm just happy that what I like is now available. And I have no problem paying for it, considering how many hours of my life I have already spent using this app's reddit version.
I visited NYC this spring with my wife and we took precisely one Uber ride, from the airport to our hotel. It was $80. We then proceeded to spend less than $80 total the rest of our several day trip crisscrossing all over Manhattan on public transit, including back to the airport to leave. Public transit was faster, cheaper, and easier than the Uber, for sure.
I've used RSS a lot in the past, but what I've found is nowadays RSS feeds deliver way, way too much content for me to consume. I do subscribe to the New York Times, which at least gets me major headlines.
Yes, but what sources? I feel like finding a way to consume things is less difficult than actually choosing sources. It's so much easier when you are using a link aggregation service that simply feeds you things selected by other users.
To directly answer your question, no. They really aren't all that similar. I mean, they share the same "Mario" DNA. But being that one is in 3D and is a rather large hub/spoke world design while the other is a 2D linear stage based experience, they are dissimilar gameplay wise.
I would really urge you to try Super Mario World in particular though. This game is damn near perfect and holds up incredibly well today. It's just an amazing achievement and a must play title for everyone who enjoys games.
I don't think many are advocating for mandated WFH, honestly. At least that isn't what I've seen.
People want the flexibility to choose what works best for them. If that means splitting time, great. If that means 90% in office, great. If that means 100% WFH, great.
I think what we are seeing is that people put real value on the ability to control this part of their lives. I'm sure there are some who would argue for full time WFH for all but I think it's a way more common sentiment to advocate simply for the ability to choose.
