  • Given how many people I've forced at nag-point to read Children of Time over the years, this is quite a relief. Good guy Tchaikovsky!

  • Definitely a lot of horror elements in the few I've read (Children of Time + sequels, Cage of Souls). I've only just scratched the surface, the man is a writing machine, but it does seem to be a trend so far.

He blends genres a lot and even his own work is kind of eclectic and all over the place, but his worldbuilding and the ability to take a totally alien concept and make it utterly believable are just top notch.

  • Joined group, still can't get in on the Play link but I've made a note to check back and see if it's updated tomorrow. What a faff!

Update: store link now works for group members.

  • Happy to help with the play store test if you decide to try and get the 20 🫡

  • Yeah I recently helped out with this mandatory testing thing for !raccoonforlemmy@lemmy.world, seems it's a relatively recent new hoop for devs to jump through.

  • They can definitely be a bit samey, and I say that as a huge fan who watches the trilogy at least a couple times a year.

Good for making progress on the tricksy part of a knitting project though since I can safely look away from the screen for a while!

  • It's a very cool feature when used correctly but I do agree it needs work to avoid the accidental mentions. It's all too easy to tag the wrong group even if you do know there's a difference, and most people don't.

That said it's not the end of the world, and it's fun blowing people's minds by telling them hello from Lemmy, so there's a silver lining 😄

  • This thread is a great example of the big downside of being on a smaller instance: OP was seemingly unaware and unable to subscribe to many cool communities and was stuck with the "defaults".

Perhaps admins and mods of smaller instances could be doing more to educate their users about how to find stuff in the wider Threadiverse?

When we had the big migration last year everyone quickly learned how to search for a community, how you had to do it twice for it to show up etc. But now it's no longer a common topic of conversation so newer users don't realise, and to make matters worse every single mobile app seems to handle search differently.

Is there some kind of "so, you're on a small instance, here's what that means" type of resource already hanging around somewhere?

    (OP, get yourself on lemmyverse.net/communities)

  • Lots of railway stations, an old church, and literally just a cliff. Yeah that sounds about right, level-of-excitement-round-here-wise!

Not entirely worth the effort but I appreciate the tutorial nontheless :D

  • Not sure I'd go quite that far myself, but I do take any opportunity to emphasise the "no links in titles" thing for my own sanity 😄

  • Some tips for this, as someone who does it all the time:

    • Tag a Lemmy community like you would a Mastodon user to get this to work, for example @til@lemmy.world, BUT...
    • The first line of your toot becomes the post title, so don't put any links or tag the community in that first line. Newer versions of Lemmy can strip out links but it still ends up looking weird. Looks best if you do something like the example below.
    • You can only post to one community, trying to tag multiple will post to the first one and ignore the rest
    • The first image attached to your toot becomes the Lemmy post image, but subsequent images get left behind
    • If your Mastodon instance has AUTHORIZED_FETCH turned on and the Lemmy community you're trying to post to isn't on 0.19 yet, it won't work at all. In theory this should be fixed when more servers upgrade but we'll see.

    Example toot format

This is my title, with nothing weird in it.

Rest of the toot goes here and will become the post body. This format will look nice on both Mastodon and Lemmy therefore not making anyone unreasonably mad at you.

    @community and #Hashtags

  • 0.19 tidied things up a bit but .world hasn't upgraded yet, that's why.

  • Er. Stupid question. How do I actually tell it where I am so this will work? Or does it only work on mobile?

  • Probably more just that this was the 90s

  • I cannot for the life of me figure out what this actually is. But congrats on building it and yay for more federated stuff!

  • Last I heard, Sunaurus had decided against hosting them due to maintenance and security concerns. Basically it would make his life more complicated, which is fair enough.
