  • Hobby stuff, UK Casual... just anywhere really. You chat to enough people and take a genuine interest and it just ends up going that way. Met a random person from Mastodon irl last year too, that was by accident, we just ended up at the same event, but it was fun!

  • There are at least 5 or so people that I originally met on Lemmy but now hang out with in other contexts too. Depends how you're using it I guess!

  • That's kind of ok actually, at least you're not pretending it's real tea.

(also it's delicious, so you've got that going for you)

  • I disagree, but I do agree that the character of Frodo wasn't what it could've been.

There's a bit in the behind the scenes stuff where they're recording that part at the very end, Frodo finishing the book and then admitting to Sam about his stab wound never really healing.

They do a take, and Elijah is delivering his lines in that absurdly slow, sleepy way that is both annoying during a watch but endlessly memeable afterwards. And then Peter Jackson is all like "ok let's take it again but this time even slower"

So tldr I blame Jackson for depicting the character as so frustratingly wet.

  • Well now I don't know whether to vote this up or down šŸ¤”

  • Ahem.

And if you'd like to learn to knit a sock (or maybe a whole pair!) come along to !knitting@lemmy.world where we are only too happy to answer newbie questions and squee over fledgling woolly creations.

(Sorry I couldn't let this promo opportunity pass me by šŸ˜…)

  • Hey, bit late to this discussion (found it while searching for something) but since you seemed interested in a casual user's pov:

I'm a member of quite a few Lemmy communities that are really small, and I'm very active on Mastodon. So having those small communities in a list feed on Mastodon is really handy since I don't miss anything and can just jump in with a reply on stuff without switching over to Lemmy.

I also post a lot of the same type of stuff to both platforms and sometimes it makes sense to keep that separate, but sometimes with niche interests it's nice to be able to cross-post and get both groups of people chatting together in the comments.

Of course this is a moot point because federation between my Masto instance and Lemmy is currently broken, but it was really great before and I miss it a ton.

  • Hey, just saw someone else discussing this issue in Eternity (but another Lemmy server) and apparently the fix is to remove and re-add your account in the app.

Figured I'd report back in, in case you're still having trouble but also in case anyone stumbles across this thread in future šŸ‘

  • If I were you I'd try logging into the mobile site so you can see whether it's an issue with your actual account / the server or just when viewed through that specific app.

  • Raccoon managed everything but the sub/superscript. Not too shabby!

  • Member of my extended family had it. His mother, immediately after he was born, was advised to go for whatever the legal process is for abandoning a child to care instead. She did not take this option, and the doctors told her she was making a big mistake. That would've been in the early 60s.

He only lived into his forties but he was a wonderful person, creative and warm and loving, with pretty much his only failure being an overwhelming obsession with the music of Robbie Williams. Came to live with us after his mam was gone and essentially became my big brother.

At his funeral, people literally lined the streets all along the route because there were way too many to fit into the actual venue.

This story doesn't have much to do with anything but I just like remembering him, so there you go.

  • That's definitely the way to go for now. PT is pretty ok software from the creator pov but it's atrocious as someone just looking to view! We'll see how things develop, maybe that changes at some point.

  • Yes you can follow channels from other servers without much of a problem. The issue that this on something like Lemmy or Mastodon, that follow would then bring the followed content into the search results of your server. It doesn't seem to work that way on PT.

Example: I have two channels on makertube.net. My husband follows them both, from another PT server (I can't remember which). But just the act of him following doesn't mean my channel shows up in a search from his server.

  • I think it's just a misunderstanding. With most other Fedi software, servers federate via the users themselves following content from other servers and then the admins have control over whether to sever that connection by defederating. With PeerTube it doesn't work that way, federation is controlled by the admin of each server in the first place and they tend to keep the list quite short (on a particular theme, or just servers by other admins they trust, or whatever).

I expect the fundamental reasons for that are the expense of hosting video content and also the risk of extremely NSFL material if you throw the doors open by default. It definitely results in a lot of behaviours that seem very strange if you're used to the usual fedi way of doing things.

  • Came here to basically say this, especially the first couple points. I've talked a few people into trying various Fedi services and cannot overstate just how much they DO NOT CARE about the techy underpinnings of it all. People just want to know a) it's cool b) where to sign up c) where to find the content they're looking for.

Anything else can wait until they learn it naturally over time or specifically ask the question.

  • The more the merrier, indeed!

  • That's just my Lemmy subscription feed but with extra AI "art" lol. But thanks, always interesting to learn about the up-and-comers. I wonder if we'll end up in an endless forking situation like with Misskey šŸæ

  • We were born too late to explore the globe or pioneer new settlements, but dammit we can try out weird new online platforms and nobody can stop us!

  • I keep seeing mentions of this piefed thing but don't actually know what it is, better do some research before a curious knitter asks me and my illusion of expertise is shattered!

But yeah, we'll see. I have no particular horse in the race of which underlying software is running things, but as soon as one of them is a valuable option for my crafty friends they'll certainly hear all about it.

  • As much as I love Lemmy, it's just honestly not ready for another big influx yet. The 0.19 update broke so much, it really brought home how precarious this whole thing still is. Those of us who are here either a) kind of enjoy the jank because it feels like an adventure b) were morally outraged enough to make a stand against Reddit or c) both.

I have a very small amount of influence in the niche community of fibre crafts and especially cross stitch. Would I be able to explain Lemmy to my audience in a way that made sense and that they might even want to try out? Absolutely. Would I actually do that until it's a bit more stable? Absolutely not, apart from a couple of specific individuals that I'm already working on.

Trying to force people to join platform B when platform A is already serving their needs makes no sense. You need to find the people who are dissatisfied, the people that would actually benefit from trying something new, and then make sure they're aware of the option.

Don't get me wrong through, I do encourage people to learn about and dip their toes into the Fediverse in general. Just last week I convinced a wave of fibre crafters (often older ladies who have barely ever ventured outside of Facebook) to try out Mastodon and Pixelfed and some of them have really taken to it! Alt text and content warnings and everything! One or two fellow YouTubers are even setting up PeerTube channels to bring over more crafting content.

Why did I tell them to join Mastodon over Lemmy? I'm literally moderator of !knitting@lemmy.world and !lemmy_stitch@sh.itjust.works so surely it's in my best interests to bring them over here?

No. I know the demographic, I know what they're annoyed about with big social media, and I thought Mastodon / Pixelfed were the best replacements for them.

As much as we would all love to see Lemmy become huge, you have to meet people where they're at. If Lemmy is genuinely the best choice for everyone who is currently in /r/adelaide or whatever, then brilliant, your strategy makes sense. But if it's not actually in their best interests, if they're just going to be annoyed by things breaking and not see enough value to make it worthwhile, then there's no point doing it just because you wish Lemmy was bigger.

Maybe the moral of this story is that the real strategy you want to be looking at is getting tiny niche influencers on side! šŸ˜„
