  • I wasn't in that sub and I may be the only Lemmy user who doesn't play DnD, but even I've heard tales of your antics. Welcome to the Fediverse!

  • This post has inspired me to go do something productive instead.

..see you in an hour, max.

  • Nah, Mastodon is a lot slicker and more robust in my experience so far (been on there less than a year, but still).

I think the "confusion" is just from having to pick an instance although iirc they made mastodon.social the "default" one for people who didn't want to choose, so maybe that hurdle is gone now, not sure.

  • Loads of them are just duplicates that already have established communities on other instances anyway, so there's not even a point to it other than someone trying to get their name on things.

  • Welcome! You've probably seen it around already, but just in case, you can search at lemmyversenet/communities and may turn up some of those niche communities that are just difficult to find otherwise. Ofc, maybe they don't exist yet, but always worth a look!

  • Oh man, that sucks, I'd eevn recommended it to a friend the other day but luckily she went with another one. Can't entirely blame the admin if he realised he was putting himself in potential legal trouble, but he probably feels terrible about it right now. Hope he's ok.

I guess as we all get settled in we'll probably want something akin to the Mastodon server covenant (basically Mastodon admins agree to abide by the terms including daily backups and giving plenty notice if the server is going to shut down, so you know you can trust those servers insofar as you can trust anyone). But we've just exploded so fast nobody's had time for it yet.

    Wild west indeed!

  • What actually happened to Vlemmy? It's completely gone? Did your admin give you advance warning so you could export subscriptions and stuff?

  • There was that one guy who went in a huff last week because he got banned, and decided to try and "take down" lemmy.world by spam-creating a ton of gibberish communities.

Was quite funny actually because they were marked as NSFW so I couldn't see them at all because all my accounts have that disabled. But everyone complaining about seeing them in the sidebar outed themselves as a perv 😄

Anyway, that's the kind of maturity level you get on the internet and I wouldn't be surprised if it's someone in a similar huff. Given that they changed the .world info to use "gay" as a slur, and went for the LGBT instance too, it starts to paint a picture...

  • I disagree with your opinion. But I applaud the sheer guts it took to share it, regardless!

  • No worries! If you know of any active groups that are missing please let me know, I do regular searches but obviously things change fast :D

  • Fwiw I am also not a fan of the movie, but was surprised to find I really enjoyed the book. Might be worth a try.

  • Hey, so here's how it works in theory.

On mastodon, Lemmy communities (not sure about Kbin magazines) show up as groups. But you have to replace the ! in their address with a @ to find them.

For example I can search for the Star Trek community (!startrek@startrek.website ) on Mastodon by searching for @startrek@startrek.website and follow it like so:

New posts and comments will then show up in my Mastodon feed as boosts. I can reply to them and it'll appear on the Lemmy side too.

You can even make your own Lemmy posts from Mastodon, the first line of your toot will become the post title and the rest will be the body, you just need to tag the "group" in there somewhere.

Where it gets complicated and my knowledge falls down is that it seems like you can't always find every community by searching like the above example, and I'm not sure why. For example I just tried @meta@lemm.ee and had no luck. BUT some that I tried to find yesterday to no avail are now showing up this morning, so maybe there's just a delay in them getting indexed the first time you search for them 🤷‍♀️

  • What does "saving" a song even mean? I'm old and confused

  • Some more niche than others but basically...making stuff. Cross stitch, yarn crafts, sewing, needle felting, dicemaking, 3d printing, very occasional cosplay, I'm about to try my first macrame kit and a friend is planning for us to learn punch needle together.

There's something just so satisfying about making real stuff you can use, or wear, or wash yourself with or whatever (I also briefly got into soapmaking).

If you want to chat about basically any craft (or just lurk and look at pretty projects, that's ok too), I've been keeping a megalist of relevant communities and magazines here https://lemm.ee/post/224890. And if anyone reading this runs a related one that should be on the list please DM me to be added!
