  • the real reason people say a 50 is "what your eye sees" is because of you put a 50mm lens on and look through the viewfinder on the camera there will be roughly no change in perspective. but yeah, this IS telephone compression, it's just that telephoto compression is also just about changing perspective. you can get the same effect by walking closer or further and cropping. though, you can't exactly walk any meaningful closer to the moon 😅. i really like the way you phrased the whole active focus vs whole field of view thing. I'm just being mildly pedantic.

  • i think they might mean more something along the lines of telltale games. and there's definitely been more than one mediocre story driven adventure with bad gameplay, we just don't remember them as easily. also, a lot of people really don't get the appeal of role playing. so games like baldur's gate might come off as "old ass gameplay on top of a long winded boring story" to the someone who also doesn't like of turn based combat. I could even see a somewhat valid complaint if they were mad about QuickTime events seeming to be more common than ever. I thought those would be a relic of the past 10 years ago... looking at you spider man! every super hero game really. why are these still a thing? who likes them?

  • yes! like, I've worked in local news, some of it is still ok. I think all tv news is too surface level to be that meaningful, but some local channels still try to actually investigate local things that matter.

but like you said, bigger cities have nothing like that. neither do small enough communities. and many local news companies have been gutted or taken as puppets by Sinclair or fts or whoever. I was working at a local fox affiliate in 2018. they weren't bad when i started because they were owned by hearst. Hearst is a broadcast distributor that affects minimal control over the content its stations produce. they recognize the value is preserving the teams and practices of the stations they buy. in 2019 that were bought by Fox directly. after that we were required to run every second of trump talking and kept having national anti abortion stories pushed on us. we had almost no time available for local content and even the stuff that did get scheduled would get bumped by trump being late for a press conference. he was over an hour late on average and we had to sit there and wait for him through every second of it.

  • honestly, if you want a more modern show without any baggage you need to get over if you aren't used to watching pre 2000 tv, watch strange new worlds. imo it's the only modern trek that even remotely captures the star trek vibe. and i think it nails it...

it may be sacrilege to say that, but i genuinely think it's the best overall presentation. if you like it, you'll probably like the older ones too, and might find it easier to approach them if you can get hooked by the very high production value new show.

  • pronouns themselves aren't a problem lol. he had a specific group in mind. "the conservatives who are complaining about this issue" the problem arises when the "them" is nebulous or used as a racist dig whistle. he is pointing out conversations using it as the latter here.

  • Ohh yeah that's fair, In my head they're dishonest about themselves because they're unlike the cartoon. my child self must've been very offended by that if I still feel that that way. can't say that i really remember though...

  • oh i know a lot of people who half heartedly voted for trump the first time as a meme. especially terminally online 18-20 year olds who had never voted or cared before. i know 6 people who voted for him as a meme then regretted it.
