I don't think "destruction vs. licensed cars" is the binary in racing games. NFS3 Hot Pursuit had licensed cars, and that probably added to the fun of the game. I think we def need more games with destructible cars and destruction-focused racing, and I agree that you need unlicensed cars to get the most out of that these days, but there are plenty of other ways to make a fun car game. Beam.NG is there for the people that want truly next-level destruction simulation, and it has multiplayer support via mods but we could use a more mainstream version of that. Wreckfest is out there, but maybe that is too "demo derby" for die-hard burnout fans. We had games like OnRush and NFS Unbound come and go, and those games were probably the closest we got to Burnout in recent times, but audiences didn't show up for those games so they have all but died.

Forza Horizon (which I mention all the time bc it is the only modern car game I have played) is plenty fun and arcadey with a whole smorgasbord of licensed cars. The cars get smashed up a decent amount, though it obviously isn't quite like a Burnout game. Tweaking the driving settings can make the game feel even more arcadey, if that is your style. If you want the destruction to affect how your car handles, that is a setting you can turn on. If you want a more simulationy driving experience, you can tweak the settings to turn that on, too. It isn't Burnout exactly, but something about it scratches a similar itch for me. I know the Horizon series is one of the most popular racing series in the current scene, I wonder sometimes if its popularity and live service model are eating the lunch of those other, smaller arcade racers.

I love this. Out of curiosity, do you play any modern racing games, like maybe the Forza Horizon series? If you're still buds with those buds, no reason you couldn't be having this kind of experience online (assuming y'all can find the time). I am curious what all the former NFS fans play these days. There isn't anything QUITE like it but a few modern games get close.

I am massively grateful for the internet, hollowed out as it is. Wikipedia especially feels like such an amazing modern marvel. I love that anytime I want to know more about something, I literally just have to type it into Wikipedia search and boom, I have an article about it and I can become a lay-expert. Our grandparents had to own an encyclopedia section or travel to library for that info.

Trying to think of an apolitical answer to the second question, because there's a whole lot about past eras I wouldn't bring back. I guess just...small communities where the only choice was to buy local? As much as I love being able to buy anything from anywhere at almost anytime, I think i'd rather live in an era when everything had the vibe of a small town where everyone knew each other and everyone helped each other out and you could let your kids roam the streets until late because you knew that your 65 neighbors cared about the wellbeing of your kids almost as much as you did. I think that kind of thing goes hand-in-hand with supporting your local businesses above all others. Maybe that's overly idyllic and small towns have always been hotbeds of gossip and social shaming, but I think a lot of us in 2025 seek a sense of community. We want to care about our neighbors but we are scared of our neighbors. I think a lot of us wish we lived in a community that had Schitt's Creek or Gilmore Girls vibes, even if that community is in a big city.

finally, the line went up enough! they have achieved the golden number! Now they will chill and stop hoarding all that money! Or stop laying off thousands of people a month! . . . Right?

Idk if I have a solution to your problem, but i agree that sometimes browsing beehaw feels like an exercise in gritting my teeth and exposing myself to the horrors of the world. I wish this space was a little more like reddit in the sense that it would be nice to be here and have conversations that are not about current events, which are so exhausting lately. I make a point of mostly posting about things besides US politics for this reason, bc i feel like other users really have those topics covered. I used to post more in Jokes and Humor because I thought this server really needed some more levity, but I was getting all my memes from Facebook, and then I was trying to not be on FB after the 2024 election, and now the only places I see memes are places where the memes are pretty political. Not so good for the levity problem.

One idea that might help you: subbing to active non-Beehaw Lemmy communities that are less serious. Most of those communities post more than any one beehaw community, so if you go to the "subscribed" feed and sort by "hot", the majority of posts you see will be from those outside communities. I subbed to 196 for a little while before realizing that that one community dominated my feed bc people be postin on there constantly. I didn't want that, but maybe that would be a boon for you.

Lollll I edited the headline for clarity. I felt that the base headline didn't make it clear enough that revenge porn was the focus of the issue. AI porn in and of itself is a separate issue. And all AI is exploitation, so I'm not sure what you are trying to get at. My preference would be for real people to be paid for sex work, rather than tech companies.

That makes sense actually. I'm guessing they have been sued for similar stuff in the past and as you said, the small revenue stream is not worth the cost in lawsuits.

can anyone speak to why payment processors care about AI porn at all? With the duopoly of PayPal and Stripe, I'm not totally clear why the payment processors think that AI Porn will impact their bottom line in the slightest. If people take issue with the payment processors' implicit approval of these practices, what are they gonna do? It's not like there are any viable alternatives.

Do we think this is because of anything other than the fact that last year was a presidential election year? The opinions of the masses are VERY malleable to messages of political campaigns. Less active campaigns = fewer strong opinions about wedge issues.
