  • That's the advantage of having multiple companies. You can use profits from one to prop up another struggling one. Musk is the master of that. But considering that Virgin also operated the failed Virgin Orbital and Virgin Hyperloop, I don't think Branson is a stranger to that either.

Meanwhile talking about safety, an earlier SpaceShipTwo prototype (VSS Enterprise) blew up spectacularly after the copilot unlocked the feather during the boost phase. It was supposed to be operated only during reentry. The feather had also activated without command after unlocking. Unless they got very serious after that accident, it's very likely that SS2 is just as foolhardy as the Titan sub.

  • I don't know what people are expecting to happen with the Linux desktop. If there was ever a year of the Linux desktop, it was probably in the mid-2000s, when Ubuntu made the Linux desktop usable for regular people and promoted it with free installation CDs.

  • Many Americans have this moronic notion of their soldiers being the saviors who can never do any harm. They're quick to lash out at the suggestion that US armed forces are like any other invasion force - they always inflict torture and immeasurable tragedy on the inhabitants of the places they invade. History and the people of the places they've invaded are not on their side - the US is known as a bully who topples democracy in other nations and leaves the place disgracefully in ruins.

  • I know this looks hopeless. But the entire humanity isn't responsible for the mess the world is in. In fact, the vast majority of humans are innocent beings who don't intend any harm on other humans or the nature.

It's just a tiny percentage that's the problem - an extremely greedy and sociopathic minority. Making the entire human race disappear is not going to work, since these vermin will find a way to sacrifice all the innocent ones, save themselves and take all the resources for themselves (exactly like in this news story). The only reason there is some sanity is because the good people fight back. And that's the only option we have.

  • Bordering on dark patterns? Windows is riddled with ads and makes countless unknown connections when online. It's literally a Trojan OS. I don't understand how far ms has to push before its users realize that they are being mugged.

  • The titan sub had enough customers with a spot worth a quarter million. Half a million is not a big jump from there. I guess there are enough billionaires out there to keep filling their coffers in such dangerous pursuits.

  • The Apache to AGPL re-licensing seems OK - considering that many other projects in similar situation chose non-FOSS licenses like BSL. But CLA replacing DCO? What will prevent the project from going closed-source in the future, without the approval of the contributors? This doesn't look good for the project.

  • Google reached that position by keeping the platform pleasant till no one else was left standing. That should be an antitrust activity in any free market. Remember this when you see Google gaslighting you about the moral implications of using adblocks.

  • The real villainy here is that Google is trying to project this practice as stealing. They have started dictating what you can or can't do on your system (this has parallels with their crooked WEI efforts).

Just in case you are worried about the moral implications of using ad blockers on YouTube, remember this - they didn't become the video hosting monopoly by playing fair. They waited till all their competitors were dead, to start demanding money and aggressively pushing ads. If you are worried about the income of the creators, please pay them directly - don't feed a false 'dont-be-evil' corporation.

  • Of course they will be used for decision making processes. And when you complain, they will neglect you saying that the 'computer' said so. The notion that the computer is infallible existed even before LLMs became mainstream.
