If you don't just look at desktop computers, GNU/Linux and Android/Linux are the most used operating systems in the world (not sure which is in the lead).
If you look only at desktop computers, the most used OS is Minix, which is installed on most Intel CPUs and motherbords.
Yes, civilization ends if the power is out for weeks.
The politicians have thought of this, but "people can't pay for groceries anymore" isn't the top priority.
The situation will be like a war zone or a failed state. If the government can't restore power, its money will also be worthless, electronic or not.
Will Lays corpos kidnap me from my country to drag me in front of a US court?
I mean, at this point, it wouldn't surprise me. Just thought Disney would do it first.
tl/dr:
They're an old spec from 2002
They're too small to click for people with increased accessibility needs
They serve the needs of app publishers (making their app visible at all times), not those of the user
-> There are too many of them
-> They look bad
What if you're working full time, developing a software used by tens of thousands of people, but their donations only amount to a hobbyist contribution?
You are basically demanding enterprise quality from devs who get $1000/month for their 40h/week work.
That's straight up ridiculous.
Or rather, unrealistic.
At this point, if the devs acted economically, they'd simply stop working on lemmy, take a software dev job, and earn 8x more money.
And you are somehow still criticizing them for not doing more, while they are making lemmy possible, for peanuts.
If you have a current budget of $1000/month, per dev, you are forced to relax a little on best practices.
This isn't a professional endeavour, and it won't be until donations increase by a factor of 5+.
