  • Especially collecting rain water on your own property.
"Fun" fact: In a lot of communities, the right to all rain water was sold to a private corporation, so collecting it privately is theft.

  • A job interview is a conversation, not an interrogation.
Ask as many questions as your potential future employer does, and don't put yourself below them.
You are equals negotiating whether you want to enter into a business partnership.

    This achieves several things:

    • First, you learn more about what working with them will be like, when you actually ask.
    • Second, if they react negatively and try to establish a position of dominance over you, well then you know that they're like that.
    • Third, it's a good way to fight stage fright and feelings of insecurity. This is not a test you pass or fail. Or rather, the other party is equally likely to fail your expectations.
    • Lastly, and most importantly, it communicates an air of confidence, which actually makes it much more likely you'll land the job if you want it.

Being timid and submissive makes you look desperate, which is not a good look, and will likely lead to a lower salary as well.

  • Gnome devs have a clear vision of what Gnome is supposed to be:
simplistic, designed for touchpad and keyboard, not mousy-clicky, and staying out of your way.

People install it, miss stuff they are used to from traditional desktops like Windows or Plasma, and bolt that back on using extensions from third parties.
They install those extensions from a different source than Gnome itself (Gnome from their distro repos, extensions from the website).

And then they complain when those third party add-ons from a different source aren't perfectly integrated or in sync after an update.

    And blame the Gnome devs.

  • The devs need an instance with real users and real load to test changes.
    lemmy.ml is that test instance.
It's a non-optional part of the dev pipeline, that's why its upkeep is financed by dev donations, too.
So, it is true, and it isn't misleading supporters, or misappropriating donations.

  • It's a bike with only one gear with a freewheel. Lets you coast without pedaling.
They're more popular than fixed gear where I live, cause you can ride them like a normal bicycle.
The reason is less maintenance and fewer things to break. I guess they work well for utility cycling in flat areas, but some people are crazy enough to compete in Mountainbike races with them.

  • Oh god, those old adventure games.

Where doing things in the wrong order (which was explained nowhere) would lead to permadeath, or worse, getting stuck with no way to progress and no hint what you missed in a previous area you can't return to.

All I remember from police quest is getting killed or fired for missing a step at a routine traffic stop, or forgetting to check the tire pressure every time you start driving.

In Leisure Suit Larry 1 you straight up get killed without warning if you step onto a street (run over by a car) or into a back alley (mugged and clubbed to death), or take a cab with wine in your inventory (cab driver takes it, drinks it and crashes).

    Fun times!

  • One can also have endless arguments about the color turquoise. Is it rather green, or rather blue?

The answer to that question is "no".
It's turquoise. You wouldn't argue about whether orange is yellow or red, either.

  • Fixed Gear advantages:

    • can slow down by pushing back on pedals -> almost no brake pad wear
    • almost no maintenance
    • can do trackstands and ride backwards
    • unique, fun riding style
    • completely quiet drivetrain
    • less interesting to thieves

    Drawback:

    • can't switch gears

    Geared Bike advantage:

    • can switch gears

    Drawbacks:

    • basically the inverse of everything above

Single-Speed bikes can do none of the things fixed gear bikes can do, and also can't switch gears.

  • The best game of the early 90s was "Das Schwarze Auge: Die Schicksalsklinge" (later translated and re-released with dumbed-down mechanics as "Realms of Arkania: Blade of Destiny"), and I'm willing to die on that hill.

  • Liquid Trees

  • The "cost" of maintaining trees is paid by the city to people living, buying things and paying taxes in the city.
People who don't have a college education and get to make a living working outside, improving their neighborhood.

The fake trees are likely put up and maintained by a tech corporation from out of state.

  • I love this about lemmy.
Like someone stumbling into the wrong house and still being welcomed.
It's a lot more informal and relaxed than on the piss page of the Internet.
