I'm not sure what the exact circumstances are here, but something to note is that upgrading to 0.19 will mostly just help with outgoing federation (0.19.2 is much more reliable and robust when delivering activities to other instances compared to 0.18). We will start seeing the full benefits of this as more of the network upgrades.
Based on the description, I am thinking this was related to some general issues we were having after the 0.19 upgrade (which have been solved now). Thanks for the info!
Hey, can you share some more about this login bug? I'm not aware of any login issues currently. Could it be related to an app you were using not supporting 0.19 yet?
I try to write summaries of updates whenever we have them in this community (I edited the OP here as well, btw). In general I've also written some Lemmy documentation about scaling, but I think there are actually very few instances which have similar problems to lemm.ee, as the vast majority of instances are far smaller. So probably my experiences are not super useful for most people 😃
"Huge contributor" is definitely over selling it 😃 I try to contribute a bit here and there, especially with things that are relevant for this instance
Currently the database is a managed DigitalOcean Postgres instance, but I am going to migrate it to a 32 thread 128 gb RAM dedicated server.
It's something that I've been hoping we won't need, as the managed database service has allowed me to not worry about patches, backups, etc (they took care of all of that automatically). Unfortunately it is clear now that further upgrades are just too costly on that service & actually the amount of configuration and tuning I would like to do is simply not possible there. So seems like right now, moving to the dedicated server for the database is the only option.
Admins are quite active behind the scenes (the report queue is constantly being handled).
Personally, I have stopped posting on my main account for the most part, as my identity is more or less public information, and this has been used in some attacks against me. So for regular posting, I am using a more anonymous alt account. But the instance is definitely not abandoned.
The lemm.ee backend is hosted in Europe, and as far as I understand, it seems that homemade firearms are illegal in most of Europe. In other words, I don't think this instance would be a good fit.
I think the OP is talking about Lemmy having both a content preview and a text area for link posts.
Some users tend to write their own summary in the text area, so when opening up a post, the result will be:
I agree that this is a bit clunky in terms of UX
