  • I just unsubscribe from communities which appear in All anyway, it's a pretty good solution IMO.

  • Thank you!

  • I think voting based on quality of content (and NOT whether you agree with it) is the best approach for healthy discussions. If somebody is a low effort troll, then for sure downvote (and maybe even consider reporting).

OTOH, if somebody makes a well written and thoughtful post about why Totoro is the best Ghibli movie ever, and meanwhile you think Totoro is not even in their top 3, then I would still recommend NOT downvoting 😃

  • The problem is that if you have two communities with exactly the same purpose, then that will encourage people to duplicate posts to both. This splits up discussions into two separate comment threads. Also, merging these communities at the client end will cause you to see any duplicated posts twice 😅

  • Yeah, kind of a strange choice to split like that. Are they intending to start crossposting to both communities?

  • Hey, we have a process for taking over communities from inactive mods on lemm.ee.

    Copied from our FAQ:

How can I take over an inactive community on lemm.ee?
    1. Make a post in the community you want to take over
    2. DM me (@sunaurus) 1-2 sentences about what your plans are for the community, and a link to the post you made in the community

If the community you want is really inactive, then I will be happy to pass ownership to you!

  • Votes from non-federated instances can influence what people from federedated instances see and vote on. So in a hypothetical scenario where Threads users would be able to vote on Lemmy posts, the Threads algorithm could still indirectly affect us even if we don't federate with them.

  • We are already using object storage for images actually 😃

I think creating communities resolved around pictures is totally fine, as you can post pictures from external hosts like imgur, postimages and many others - Lemmy will happily display these images inline.

By the way, Glacier is not suitable for hosting images on Lemmy, it's intended for files which are accessed very infrequently.

  • Hey, what exactly is the problem with logging in?

  • Hey! To be clear, !meta@lemm.ee will remain the main communication channel going forward. I am already on Matrix as well, so for sure during any Lemmy incidents I will be active in the Lemmy channels on Matrix - if you're already on Matrix, you're covered.

This Discord is just something supplementary, specifically aimed at people who are not using Matrix. There won't be any announcements that are only made on Discord or anything like that!

  • In this scenario, Threads posts would not reach us, but we could still be indirectly affected by their Algorithm as it applies to non-Threads posts.

    Here's how:

    1. The Threads Algorithm decides what posts to show their users, these posts get massive amount of activity due to sheer number of Threads users
    2. If lemmy.world decides to federate with Threads, then their front page could be fully dictated by Threads (because Threads votes would completely overshadow any organic votes from lemmy.world users)
    3. lemmy.world users interact with these posts they see on their front page, thus boosting those posts to the front pages of other instances

It's a hypothetical scenario which makes a few assumptions (most notably proper interoperability between Threads and Lemmy), but if it happens then it's a real problem that we can't really defeat unless all big instances defederate (or other tools are added).

  • Wow, both of those are among my all time favorite games. Good taste!

  • It helps, but it's still not a silver bullet. For example, a Lemmy app could contain no malicious code in its open source repository, but malicious code could still be added to a binary release in an app store.

  • When I read the title of the post, I immediately wondered if anybody else with tinnitus had commented yet.

"Silence" sounds amazing, would love to try it some time 😅

  • I guess some people miss the content from Reddit. IMO it's not really necessary at all.

By the way, when you say "here", do you mean you found some lemm.ee community doing this? Or are you talking about lemmit?

  • Thanks for releasing it so quickly!

This "sunaruas" sounds like a cool guy 😛

  • I'm thinking about doing some emergency updates on a Discord server - it seems like a huge amount of users have Discord anyway, so it might be the most convenient way. I'll probably make a post about it soon!

  • Most instances use a federation blocklist, so it's opt-out. Technically federation allowlists also exist, but manually maintaining an allowlist nowadays (with thousands of instances out there) would be quite painful, unless you really only want to federate with a small handful of instances.
