  • There's actually research that shows that farming under solar cover increases moisture retention and the crop yields of certain plants. You'll also note that a lot of these installations are on marginal land- steep hillsides, arid land, and even floating on reservoirs. The latter slows the rate of evaporation from the reservoir as well, so it has a net environmental benefit.

You're right though, not every installation is perfect. But we seldom ask these same questions when it's a new housing development or a Walmart with a moat of paved parking around it.

  • I would presume it's because they're low in sugar. Due to exploding diabetes rates, Mexico has been making a concerted effort in the last few years to stem the consumption of sugary foods, drinks and snacks, particularly amongst kids. You can't have a cartoon mascot on a box of cereal, for example. They put big stickers over Tony the Tiger before changing the packaging completely. And the cost of snack foods has skyrocketed, making it largely unaffordable for lots of Mexican families. A bag of chips there costs more than it does in North America.

My guess is that this is part of that effort.

  • I'm trying to figure out Trump's game here. We've been negotiating on trade and security and we backed off on the DST. What's the benefit of Trump antagonizing us? Is he trying to push Carney to get him to lose his cool?

Carney's response was predictable and measured. One gets the sense that that is what peeves Trump most of all. But Carney is wisely trying to buy Canada as much time as possible to get our shit together with national projects and new trade deals elsewhere.

In my heart, I hope all of this is in anticipation of a massive trade counteroffensive that includes the largest of fuck yous possible as we skid out of the driveway.

  • Private equity really is the last step in late stage capitalism, isn't it? When the profits have been wholly privatized and the externalies wholly dumped on the public will the cycle be complete. We see this with oil and gas assets all the time- as a well or production site falls out of favour by a large oil company because they are unprofitable under their metrics, those assets are sold to smaller, leaner companies that can make a profit on them. Right up until they are owned by the smallest, shadiest companies that ring out the last few dollars before abandoning the asset altogether and declaring bankruptcy. And then who gets left holding the bag on the cleanup of that orphan well? You and I. There is nobody left to hold accountable.

Because explicit or not, we expect governments to backstop this activity. And when it all goes wrong, the fingers get pointed at the government for not properly regulating the activity in the first place.

  • You don’t fix this by lecturing young men. You fix it by giving them a sense of purpose and identity that doesn’t rely on putting someone else down.

Sounds like they need the shit slapped out of them.

Maybe they should just take the advice that we've been giving to women and minorities for the last 100 years and tell them that if they want to succeed they should just fucking work harder at it.
