Yes, but there's also people actually not doing anything. I am dev lead and after building a team, which was a lot of work, I am at a point where I am doing fuck all on most days. Maybe join a few meetings, make some decisions and work on my own stuff otherwise.

Double taxation treaties are very common. What I've been told by US coworkers makes the US stand out is that you still need to file your taxes with the IRS, even when living abroad. No idea if that's actually the case.

To be fair, that's your personal thing, because you have knowledge about this topic. In movies and TV a crap ton of stuff is abbreviated to not bore the audience to death. Some shows portrait a certain domain more or less realistically but still take dramatic license with other things. After all, we watch this stuff to escape from reality.
