When I was a Disney employee (fuck you, Bob Iger) I had a pass that I could enter a Disney park any time I wanted.
Now, I don't really see what's so good about that unless you live in short distance to such a park, but it was still cool, and made for a cheap garden leave vaycay
Sure there are plenty of situations where services remain open and free (for now), like wikipedia, linux distros, etc. but we aren’t always that lucky.
It's got absolutely fuck all to do with "luck." It has everything to do with adoption.
Most people won't adopt things that aren't sufficiently pretty. They're more than happy being data whores for social media pimps because it's so fun.
I have a very very real problem with this oversimplification of very distinct tech viewpoints.
Like, what, you dont think information should be freely available? You LIKE the model where information is locked down with hefty fees? Because that's what the actual "tech bros" want.
This is at best ignorant and at worst just hateful.
in the future the trope is going to be "I'm going back in time to k--- Tr--p" and everyone has to stop them because it would mean the great global awakening would never happen
Although lately I've been burned multiple times by inaccurate online information saying a place was open when it wasn't, so I've started to call ahead instead.
Me: I need spec -- not just trust code
Manager: You always make unnecessary demands, I'm replacing you
AI: I would be happy to help you, if you could provide spec?
Manager: god fuckin dammit
I honestly sometimes think to go into business myself just so I can write contracts that say "you will give us a fucking spec" and just keep billing while they fuck around not providing a spec
