  • Singapore has a population density around 7800 people per square kilometer. With that many people, many of whom ride motorcycles because its so crowded, regulating their noise and emissions output is in everyone's interest. Singapore also does not fuck around with punishments. They have mandatory canings for some lower crimes and they execute hundreds of people a year for drug offenses.

The US does similar things. You aren't allowed to modify the ECUs on cars to push them outside EPA standards. A truck mechanic got tagged for installing devices that let people roll coal and ended up with huge fines.

  • Tame Impala nailed it.

When we were living in squalor

    Wasn't it heaven?

Back when we used to get on it

    Four out of seven

Now even though that was a time I

    Hated from day one

    Eventually terrible memories

    Turn into great ones

  • I think its more that some folks have been saying they needed their guns in case the government overeached and curtailed freedom. The government is doing exactly that, and many of the "guns will save my family from Incle Sam" folks are cheering the changes instead of rising up. People are pointing out the hypocrisy, not demanding people die for them

  • Arc flash hazard training messed me up. They showed a video where a guy is working on some switchgear when suddenly the frame is all white and then the guy is just GONE, but the floor and everything around where he was is a different, very red, color. That "if" regarding survival is doing some heavy lifting.

  • Most trucks are the size they are because US fuel economy standards scale inversely with the size of the vehicle. It's hard to make a 45mpg small truck, but large trucks only need to hit 22mpg so poof, all your trucks are now big trucks.

  • This is the scenario I saw debated in the early 2000s on slashdot if you replace Proton with Wine. Some folks didn't like Wine because if it works well it means there's no reason to build natively for Linux, hurting Linux and contextualizing it within Microsoft's ecosystem, instead of beside it. I'm all for anything that means I can play my Steam library and not run Windows, so I think Proton is the bee's knees.
