  • And that's fine. I said I really liked gnome. The only extensions I had were weather in the top bar and dash to dock. I just wanted it to do a few extra things, and I wanted to play around with widgets. Gnome was also a bit too rigid for my taste. Plasma makes tweaking small things a joy.

For me, ootb Plasma felt too much like Windows. I use Windows all day at work so I want my home machines to look and feel completely unlike Windows.

  • For now, I'm doing "McDonald's at Home" lol I make biscuits and sausage patties ahead of time. You can make all of your eggs ahead of time, but I like to make my eggs when I eat them. And reheat your biscuits in an oven or toaster oven. Otherwise, the texture ain't right. If you somehow made too much steak last night, you can use that in place of the sausage. Steak for breakfast makes me feel like a king lol Having biscuits on hand adds some flexibility because I love biscuits and gravy. I'll also make a breakfast casserole from eggs, sausage, cheese, unrolled croissant dough, and bell and jalapeno peppers. I've tried doing biscuit crusts from scratch before, but it's a lot of work when the alternative is busting open a can of croissant rolls lol

I really like tamago kake gohan for being quick, easy, and delicious. In case you've never tried it, I use my instant pot to make super sticky rice the night before. You reheat the rice in the microwave, crack a raw egg into it, and add some Japanese soy sauce. Then you use chopsticks to pretty violently whip it all together until it's got kind of a creamy texture. You can have a hot bowl in under 3 minutes. It's stupid simple and fast.

And again, steak for breakfast is awesome. I'll get a cheaper cut like a sirloin, dice it up, and cook it through in my cast iron. Then I scramble some eggs and add a little of the steak and top with shredded cheese. A small bowl of steak and eggs really keeps me feeling full all day like >90% of the time.

I've done "Chick-fil-A at Home" too. That's not one I make ahead of time. It's just a chicken strip or some popcorn chicken in the air fryer, one scrambled egg, shredded cheese, and a tortilla. I'll use the carb balance tortillas that have extra fiber. And hot sauce if that's your thing. Salsa also goes very well on it.

  • I'm working on reestablishing mine. I've set an alarm for 5:45. I snooze it, cuddle my wife, and ten minutes later, when it goes off again, I get up. Every day. No exceptions. I immediately take my meds, and maybe play some games on the Switch with my headphones until about 7:00, at which point I take my dogs out, poop, make breakfast, and do something else. If it's the workweek, I sign into work at 7:30. If it's the weekend, I might empty the dishwasher, play some more video games, then take my dogs to the park at 9:00 because that's when everyone else shows up.

I'm also working on performing certain tasks at regular intervals. Wednesday and Sunday are for doing laundry. If I keep that up, it takes five minutes to hang and fold it all. I do try to empty the dishwasher each morning if I can. Saturday evening, before I shower, is for changing the cat litter. And Saturday morning is for prepping my breakfast for the week.

I'm really trying to get back into routines. And being medicated for my ADHD makes it feel so achievable. For the first time probably ever, it feels good to move my body and not be snacking all the time. It's wild, man.

  • You haven't experienced happiness until you've cuddled the homies.

  • My wife really wants a car with a push button shifter. But every time I see a short of one of them getting towed with an that won't start, it's either a real chore to get it into neutral or you pretty well can't without a special tool. So they just stick them on skids and winch them onto the bed in park. I'm not sure why it has to be such a process.

  • You can pick your friends, and you can pick your nose, but you can't pick your friend's nose.

  • I bought The Sims 3 when it was new. My bedroom was already like a nautical mile from the access point so download speeds were gonna be crap anyway, but I had to run an extension cord into my closet and disable all power saving options so it could sit in the back of my closet for the better part of the week and download my game. I think it was probably 3Β½ days all in lmao

My old college buddy has HughesNet and says he hates them, but it's better than the alternative down there. Which, yeah, was a family-owned telephone company that did some dial-up on the side in the '90s and never saw a need to upgrade their equipment. The only reason it got better was because they sold out to an actual ISP. When I moved to Weatherford to finish my bachelor's degree in 2012, you were required to have landline service to get internet access. The parent company removed that requirement on Day 1, afaik.

I have physical copies of GTA IV and Skyrim on PC because it was soooooo much faster to install them from DVDs, but God help you if you need to download updates. Back then, a 300 MB download was a commitment.

Cox also rules Oklahoma County and its neighbors, but like I said, we have OEC fiber in our neighborhood. I appreciate them being local. When we bought our house, we had a little cash left over from the sale of our old condo. We thought about going with OEC right after move-in, but it was going to be $800 worth of work and they had us scheduled a month out. We needed internet immediately because it was mid-pandemic and neither me nor my wife had anywhere to go to work for a month. The mortgage don't pay itself lol

I kinda regret having to stick with Cox. I'm squirreling away some cash here and there so maybe we'll finally jump ship this summer.

If I could do it again, I'd probably stay in Oklahoma because my wife is an amazing person. She moved here from Mississippi. It frequently sucks being a couple of blue dots here. If I had it my way, we'd sell all but the essentials, load my Hondas on a trailer, and pull them with my wife's truck all the way to the PNW today. But all her family just moved up here a few years ago and she hasn't been able to see her parents regularly since 2013. Her sister has kids and she doesn't want to be unable to be involved in their lives. Can't fault her for that.

I'd steal those kids and run off to the PNW anyway where they'll actually get an education, but the cops say that's kind of illegal or something lol idk ianal jk jk or am i

Good on ya for escaping this place. Maybe one day I will too.

Oh, and my great-grandmother, born in 1923, had dial-up as late as 2017. I still cannot believe anyone was still offering it that late in the game, but there she was lol She had email. She got her first email address when she was in her late 70s, but she never learned to type. What a legend that woman was lmao

  • I grew up in the armpit of SW Oklahoma. My parents' Internet was 256 kbps in 2009. Today, they get a blazing 20 Mbps and it goes down all the time. My brother signed up for a satellite internet company that's a bit more reliable and gives him something like 50 Mbps, but iirc, his data cap is something like 250 GB and then it's overage charges. And I think he pays $120 a month for that plan.

My wife and I live in the Oklahona City area and get 250 Mbps, and only because that's all we need. We were running 500 for a while, but we almost never needed that much. We have a 1 TB data cap and pay $50 a month.

We're going to upgrade to fiber in the next few years. A local company is in our area and offers symmetrical 1 Gbps internet for like $80 a month. But there are upfront costs associated with getting it set up in the house that I don't want to swing yet. But I'm thinking more about it lately because I'd love to self host something like Nextcloud and get off of Google Drive.

Anyway, yeah, internet in cities is mostly pretty good. Once you're out in the sticks, well, good luck.

  • my wife's old Macbook is still going strong for casual use

As is the 500 dollar Acer laptop I bought in 2016 lol But yeah, my wife had wanted a MacBook Pro for a very long time. We finally had the money for it in 2019 so we got that laptop for her. In order to play games on it, I had to give her one of my Windows keys and learn how to set up Boot Camp. It's actually a perfectly serviceable gaming laptop.

She loves it. It's still holding up very well. But was it worth $2,700? Not to me. But then again, my '97 Honda probably isn't worth the $2,700 I paid for it to her, either. I don't understand why she wants overly expensive computers. She doesn't understand why I want overly crappy cars. But we did say for better or worse so here we are lol

  • Streisand Effect. Even if they take it down, it'll always be available somewhere. And the more anyone tries to scrub it from the internet, the more available it'll become.

  • I'm a simple man. If I see Whiterun, I quicksave.

  • Crashes are all a part of the Bethesda experience, and until you embrace it, you'll never experience the joy their games have to offer lol

  • Had this happen to me yesterday while I was out shopping. I'd been three other locations. I just wanted to hit up a particular place where I buy my dairy for milk, butter, and cheese before heading home, and the cashier (a little old lady) was going on and and on. Like, lady, you're really sweet, but I've been out for three hours, and I just wanna get home.

But I'm not a monster. I listened to her. I did make my escape after about ten minutes lol I'm sure she talks the ears off her grandkids.

I, too, have a tendency to ramble and over share lol

  • I've literally never owned a Thinkpad lmao I've installed Linux on:

    • HP Pavilion DV5-2077CL (Ubuntu 12.10)
    • Toshiba Protege Z835-P330 (Ubuntu 16+)
    • Acer Aspire V3-372T (Debian 12)

As for desktop machines, I have essentially the same computer I had in 2014. A 4790K on a Gigabyte Z97 board. The only hardware issues I ever ran into were a Netgear WiFi adapter (I got it to work, but I'm on Ethernet again because it's better) and my RTX 4070 that replaced my R9 290.

  • Windows: You got a kernel panic from an update just once this week? I went through two BSODs today!

Mac: It'd happen more often if I actually had software! You get everything!

Arch: While getting updates can cause crashes sometimes, new stuff is fun.

Debian: You guys are getting updates?

  • Hey, my '97 is also a Type SH. I'm the eighth owner according to the Carfax. Somehow, the interior is complete (sans radio), it has the original wheels, and was never resprayed. Except for the trunk lid when some dingbat removed the spoiler. The VIN sticker was painted over. But you can make out the numbers. All VINs match. Somehow, this car has driven 257,000 miles, and is still 99.9% complete.

I'd love to drive an AP1 at least once, but I had a Prelude when I was a teenager so getting to own another (especially with a stick) is deeply meaningful to me. I was having my midlife crisis at 31, I guess lol

  • I think the Prelude's cluster is great for a manual daily driver. And I think that for a track car, they nailed it with the S2k's cluster.

I had an auto Prelude as a kid. I traded it in 2015 for a CVT HR-V and regretted it ever since. I always told myself if I got another, I'd hold out for a manual. So getting to own another is really meaningful to me.

I'd love to get to drive an AP1 at least once, though.
