  • Yeah there's something about choosing form over substance that triggers the shit out of me. I like nice things but easy simple user friendly designs are paramount IMO especially for something that can get multiple people killed like a car.

Related: I stayed at a fancy hotel recently and the shower had a digital control panel to turn on the water, control temperature and pressure, multiple spouts etc. Take a guess how well it worked once it got steamy.

    Knobs and buttons guys, jeez.

  • I'm still driving my 2007 Volvo with less than 100k miles and it's perfect. In excellent shape, just did a 2000 mile road trip no problem.

I went to test drive some new cars and HATED all of them. I've driven plenty of cars, some good some bad, but nothing pisses me off like needing an operating manual to adjust HVAC, radio, seats, mirrors etc.

Im holding onto my car as long as i can but I'm concerned about what I'll do when it finally dies. BUTTONS guys, wtf was wrong with tactile buttons?

  • Would they really though? If there's legislation in place that could cost a doctor their license or even put them in jail, then they wouldn't be able to recommend that or do the procedure themselves. This is a huge part of the reason why there's now a huge shortage of OB/Gyn doctors in red states, because they just can't practice medicine with one arm tied behind their backs with these ridiculous laws all over the place.

  • GPT was always really bad at math.

I've asked it word problems before and it fails miserably, giving me insane answers that make no sense. For example, I was curious once how many stars you would expect to find in a region of the milky way with a radius of 650 light years, assuming an average of 4 light years per star. The first answer it gave me was like a trillion stars or something, and I asked it if that makes sense to it, a trillion stars in a subset of space known to only contain about a quarter of that number, and it gave me a wildly different answer. I asked it to check again and it gave me a third wildly different number.

Sometimes it doubles down on wrong answers.

GPT is amazing but it's got a long way to go.

  • I think the last new game I played was Mario Wii in 2012. It was challenging and engaging but easy to learn with a good walkthrough easing you in with the basics.

I still play C&C Red Alert now and then. Just dusted off my joystick and installedX-Wing alliance (upgrade at least, not the OG version from 1999). That's pretty much it. All the other games I've seen recently are either way too complicated (LoL) or just not engaging enough (Mario Kart for Switch for example, it's fine for a bit with friends but I just don't see myself playing it a lot.)

Oh, and I've been playing a lot of chess lately, currently rated around 1600 ELO.

I think it's very possible I'm just not a gamer..

  • I'm pretty sure some or all of the Toys R Us employee pension was plundered in the reorg after private equity bought the company out in2018. I remember reading about it thinking it sort of made sense technically but it was pretty egregious on a human level. This post is too true. Similar to the old Stalin gem about how killing one is a tragedy but a million is a statistic. If you're gonna do something bad do it BIG.

  • I tried playing league of legends for the first time a few months ago. I haven't done any gaming in easily a decade or two and figured why not.

Like many (most, all?) games are now it was so damn complicated. There's hundreds of characters, infinite matchups, all these different potions and powerups etc. I thought I had the basics down but the other players told me very clearly how much room for improvement there is in my game. I feel like every game I've seen and heard of lately is like that.

Back in the day we'd get the guy from the left side of the screen to the right, and sometimes you had to jump over something to get there. Where are those games now? I'm busy and don't have time to get a phd in your game's lore, I just want something simple and mindless to unwind.

  • Was he really a great explorer though? The guy dramatically underestimated the size of the earth and he and his crew probably would've died from thirst or starvation or whatever if they hadn't run smack into the new world halfway to India.

  • I didn't either until this thread. Fran Drescher is the current president of the screen actors guild and I assume this has something to do with the writers strike. I guess AI content like images and stories, plus their own likeness and brands, is an issue in the strike.

I'm not paying any attention to the writers strike because I haven't really consumed any new hollywood movies or tv shows in quite a while. Hollywood just isn't relevant anymore and they know it, there's just too much content online and other things to keep busy for me to care about their garbage.

  • It's a very commonly cited example of alternate history. I'm surprised you've never heard that before. There's been multiple books written and there's a show on Netflix called man in the high castle, all of them exploring this topic.

To answer the question, it would be interesting to see how it played out. How long would they maintain control over the US and Allies? What would resistance look like? How long would hitlers regime have lasted before being deposed? How long before collapsing under its own weight? What would the entire Cold War era have looked like, assuming the soviets lost too, and what would THEIR resistance look like? How would technology have developed without a Cold War driven space race?

Obviously it would've been a catastrophe but it's fascinating concept to speculate about.

  • AGI isn't just a tool though, it's theoretically an intelligent entity that could have its own agenda. Armed with intelligence far superior to any human, this is a potential threat. Should we not tightly control it? I know chat gpt is FAR from achieving AGI, but ethics are definitely something that will need to be addressed as the tech develops.

  • The number one alternate timeline I'd like to see is if Gore had become president in 2000. Even more than if the Nazis had won WWII or if Caesar hadn't gone to the senate that day.

(I'd also like to see the world if the spanish armada had taken a different course back in 1588 and avoided that typhoon though..)

  • No see, governor rick scott (Republican) banned his administration from using the term climate change, just like governor desantis (also Republican, surprise surprise) banned covid. So Florida is safe from both of those without any action required. Freedom!

  • There's an accountant shortage too, which nobody talks about except us in the industry. It SHOULD be talked about though, because it's another huge ticking time bomb. Financial statements audits performed by third party external accountants are designed to keep businesses honest and report factual numbers to investors. If they report false information then you get situations like Enron.

The problem is that we are overworked and underpaid like everyone else, the work has gotten vastly more complicated, regulatory compliance requirements are more burdensome than helpful, and tons of other issues. The results are that accounting enrollment has plummeted in schools, experienced professionals are being driven away from the industry in huge numbers, and more and more work is being sent overseas to be done extremely poorly. Corporations pay for their own audits and firm partners don't want to lose a good client so crappy work gets pushed through no matter what.

I'm convinced the next major financial crisis will be from a bunch of huge household name companies getting caught with their pants down after fudging too many numbers. Just a matter of time.
