  • Because lots of people thought that the previous ux was idiotic. Why are dms included with servers? That makes no sense? Why do dms disappear from the server list after you open them? It’s idiotic UX and the new way is much better. DMs are always reachable immediately and you don’t have to understand what the icons mean in order to find DMs. For my wife who uses discord maybe ten times a year, this will make her hate discord so much less.

  • That’s not the same. Beeper mini uses reverse engineering, beeper just uses Mac minis sitting in a datacenter somewhere.

  • Not really a thing. Google is trying to make it seem like there is, but I’ve never met a single person that has ever cared.

  • My wife works in the industry, they do not refer to petroleum as gasoline until it is all the way downstream. Gas always refers to natural gas at the midstream point. If you are an end consumer then you have natural gas, gasoline, and diesel.

  • I’ve never heard anyone describe discord as a social media platform, cause that’s not what it is. It’s an instant messaging platform.

  • The underlying CR report is more detailed but it’s still a dumb study because it’s reported problems from the consumer, not actual problems. E.g. eco mode on the Ioniq 5 is a “problem” even though it worked as designed. Also they proceed to recommend Tesla even though Tesla has the worst reliability rating in the industry according to numerous other studies. Overall terrible study.

  • The “we are not the same” meme. I understand the point, it’s just not funny. It’s cringey as hell.

  • Exactly that. Gasoline or diesel. Both different amounts of refinement of petroleum. This is the one case where I think Europe describes something weirdly. Petroleum is the raw product, not the final output.

  • “I’m not racist but the weather is nice today“

  • Oh no I have to mod a config file to make it do what I want…why can’t the devs just read my mind???

nobody has to read anyone's fucking mind, why can't you just make it a fucking settings menu? You're the ones making it HARDER TO EVANGELIZE FOSS. For fuck's sake! You're entirely missing the point!

  • If you’re the kind of helpless person who has to be spoon fed answers, then perhaps Linux or FOSS isn’t for you, and other alternatives exist that have professional support staffs.

you're the exact kind of person making FOSS look bad to the majority of people. Since you don't seem to realize, I run the programming.dev instance. I most likely have been working in tech longer than you. This kind of attitude you have towards "people should just learn everything about every piece of software they use" is why people like you shouldn't be near open source software at all. You make it fucking impossible for people like me to get anyone to even try FOSS because all they remember are morons like you saying "just figure it out". I'm not going to teach my mother in law what a fucking flatpak is and there is absofuckinglutely no way that she is going to be able to google it and figure it out. It has nothing to do with learned helplessness. It has to do with the fact that she's a painter, not a tech guru, and gatekeeping FOSS by purposefully making it hard to use is such an idiotic thing I have no clue how you could even defend it. Your actions make big tech companies become more entrenched in people's lives. It is by your hand that people don't want to use things like Firefox.

  • I hope you learn one day that making generalizations about groups of people based on your own vague notions is neither good nor kind.

that's literally what you're doing. Your evidence is a quote from the bible that is both the opposite of what it says in multiple other locations in the bible, but also the opposite of actual teachings in actual churches. You're making generalizations about the group based on just a few short sentences rather than looking at the entire religion as a whole.

  • Canadians aren’t in america eh? Absolutely no classification we can think of, perhaps a continent or 2 that could describe let’s say a north and south “america” of some sort?

are you purposefully misreading my comments? it's like you're trying to read the exact opposite of what I said.

also I gotta edit to add this, I’d love to see where you perceive racism in my comment, just as a readers exercise

you literally said that a group shouldn't be called what it wants to be because it's not from a specific region. that's literally racism. https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/racism

  • I don’t know why you think 20% of a population being mutilated indicates that it isn’t being encouraged. And no, Islam requires it, Christianity encourages it. Just because some people are smart enough to know they shouldn’t mutilate their children doesn’t mean it isn’t being encouraged. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2801794/

  • You’re ignoring what I’m saying. I never said that Christians were bound by anything. In fact I explicitly said otherwise.

The circumcision is never at the church, it’s always after at a hospital if the person is not already circumcised. If you never knew that I’m sorry but it’s what happens. And I’m not really going to bother with providing you evidence. You’re clearly not going to believe whatever I post as you clearly don’t read what I write anyway. You can just go look up rates of circumcision in America. Have a nice day.

  • Not really. If you’re struggling with it it’s a you problem (and probably partially racism to boot). This isn’t a hard concept. Mexicans are Americans, Canadians are Americans, Peruvians are Americans, even though none of them live in the USA. Just because we (white people) decided to call two locations India doesn’t mean that only one group gets that name. That’s idiotic.

  • Anything you use on your computer to help you complete a job. Docker, ripgrep, IntelliJ, graalvm, javac, cargo, Zulip, etc. Thinking that tools are just contained to be what comes bundled with your os is a weird take to me.

  • I making a point that you seem to be missing. If you have to point out some way to get around a problem that any given user will have with a piece of software, then that’s why your software is not being used. This is the continual problem with the Linux community, they think that everyone wants to learn this stuff. Most people just want their software to work. They don’t want to have to do any sort of googling to figure out why it’s crashing or why it’s running slow or why it doesn’t have this or that feature. Every time someone like you tries to point out that someone can just google something you lose another person that may have been willing to use FOSS in the future. Instead, maybe go try to fix their problem because they sure as hell aren’t going to.

  • What’s flatpak and why in the world would I need to know about it in order to use a cad program? Do you see why people don’t use this stuff?
