  • Many many years before the reddit migration, /r/goldandblack had a lotide instance that consisted mainly of posts crossposted by a bot.

The constant dump of empty posts on my feed really helped me understand that you don't want to blindly mirror reddit posts. If you just want a list of stories, an rss feed is better. You come to a link aggregator for the discussion around the links and without the discussion it's just a crappy version of an RSS feed.

Some people who haven't experienced a ghost city online don't realize that.

  • I dunno. I don't really feel like the character of Star Trek fits within the typical combat game template.

The whole point of the franchise is exploration, finding out what's out there, and expanding the realm of the possible. If I'm in charge of a Starfleet starship, I fully expect some number of my encounters to be techtech'd away or for many of the challenges to be moral rather than tactical.

The enterprise no bloody a b c or d was in constant peril, but the enterprise d was only very rarely in a situation they couldn't shoot their way out of.

  • Its when you find the clitoris for the first time.

Joking aside, it's a description of the runtime of a thing for a size of a data set. Its expressed as a function. So for example an exponential function would get longer and longer as your data set size grows, linear time has a basically proportional operating time compared to the size of the data set, and log(n) would see runtime increase very little as data set size increases.

  • Even if you're printing with anything but PLA, you should be ventilating well, since it obviously releases chemicals into the air -- you can smell it. PLA does as well, but from the smell it seems like a much different one.

  • I think it would be, but not in the way you're thinking.

ActivityPub is based on servers with domain names and accessible IP addresses communicating with each other. It's mandatory based on the fundamental design of the standard.

So if you were running one of the phones that can run a straight linux distribution, and you connected it to a permanent internet connection as a web server and copy of lemmy with a domain name, then it's possible. But it's no longer a phone, it's a server with the form factor of a phone.

  • I dunno. If you could run some distro like mobian on some phone with an 8 core processor, could be a decent choice for a little instance.

I think you'd want to use a phone with USB C then use a powered USB-C dock with wired ethernet, but get to square 0 and I bet you'd have something that could really sit there just serving for a long time. I'd be a little concerned with IO access since the internal MMC would be constantly hammered, but there are USB-C external drive enclosures you could easily use that for storage and not have to worry about mutilating your phone's mmc.

Part of me wants to try sometime just to prove it can be done.

  • I've been with GoDaddy for going on 20 years.

Its worked well for me. I started off with their web hosting, but these days they just handle my domains. They've got an API so you can use them as a dynamic DNS provider as well.
