  • Honestly, I thought you were using it rudely as well. Like,"Look in the mirror, ya dipshit" Your explanation cleared it up, and then going back and rereading it, I see what you meant, but don't get too bent about the person taking you the wrong way. I probably would have done the same at first.

  • I remember seeing some war footage or something of a guy being executed from a meter away by a truck mounted .50 caliper gun. His head just disappeared. After my initial, holy shit! why did I just watch that, I thought, I can't think of a better way to go. Minus the buildup.

  • The app may be windows only, but it can often help to ask for alternative. And not things like "What can I use in Linux that is the same as

    <app>

    under Windows". More along the lines of "I need to create or do

    <x>

    . In Windoze I used

    <app>

    , how do I get the same work done under Linux". Sometimes you don't have much of a choice, go emulation layer or VM, but often you can find a different path to the same result and once you get used to it, it's a better solution.

  • I started using Linux as a liberal arts major in the late '90s. Both my grandparents (RIP) and my parents (partial RIP) kept having issues with Windows on their computers. I was constantly being called to help them with crap. 20+ years ago I asked if I could try something and they didn't care, as long as it worked. Debian and XFCE. Configured their email, hooked up the printer. Suddenly the service issues went from several times a month to once every 5+ years. And 90% of those issues just was clearing out the printer queue. I have never once understood the LiNuX iS OnlY FoR suPer TeCH NeRDS bullshit.

  • Whitey here. I once got stopped by border patrol at an immigration checkpoint on the freeway. They had me pull off to the side, pulled all the shit out from under my seats, out of the door pockets, etc. Opened the trunk and took everything out. Brought a dog over. Then said I was good to go. Took me a little to get everything put back in place.

    Last time I was stopped was flying back after taking a solo surf trip to Central America. They just couldn't handle that I went by myself. Took me into a little room at the airport. Took my boards out of my board bag, emptied my carry-on and suitcase, then tried to grill me about what I had been doing. I had a 5 hour layover, so I wasn't overly concerned. Just seemed so stupid.

  • I feel like so much of the disagreement about racism in the US in social media, is a difference between society at large and individuals. Most people aren't racist (over the top so. However, I alsothink everyone probably has some sliver, however slim, of racism in them). If you travel around this globe of ours, some countries do suck more than others, but people are, for the most part, pretty friendly and welcoming.

    That said, I think it's insincere to believe that the historical trauma of the history of the US has not had lasting generational/racial negative effects.

    If I think someone is saying I'm racist because I'm white, I dig in my heals a bit and think, if not say, what the fuck? If I think they are talking about systemic inequality in general, the history, the current data, etc., then I've been getting better and better at not having that blood pressure rise in defense and instead start from a point that we probably agree on a lot, and just may have differences in how to address the problem.

  • Instead of sharing parts of the document, I wish they had shared the document. I have no idea if there is a legal reason for the way they shared. If it's not creatively quoted, man, this is just...more of the shit. Handmaid's Tale indeed. I couldn't stand the show, but when I read the book 35 years ago, the possibility of it becoming real-life seemed pretty slim. Fool that I was.

  • “Criminals will no longer be able to hide in America’s schools and churches to avoid arrest,” former acting homeland security secretary Benjamine Huffman said in a statement announcing the new policy. “The Fuckhead administration will not tie the hands of our brave law enforcement, and instead trusts them to use common sense.”

    Man, I hate religion as much as the next sane person, but aside from institutional diddling, I don't think that's where criminals are hanging out.
