  • I would love to pin it on one thing, like social media. While I felt, feel, like that was a big variable in the downfall, I can't underestimate the loss of the "American Dream". I felt like phones should be banned. But some teachers felt like phones could be integrated into the curriculum. I could see both points, but honestly I just felt like society had passed me by. One of my master teachers, when I had been student teaching 25 years previously, said it was time to go when the students no longer entertained you. I felt like that was about right. I don't think knowledge at your fingertips is a reason not to actually learn stuff.

  • I retired from the job 5 years ago. Your description rings true from my experience then (and was a big part of me retiring), and the colleagues I've stayed in touch with say it's very noticeably worse now. I'm glad I got out when I did.

  • ¡Olé!

  • I drove into Baja with a few friends decades ago. A girl that was with us kept saying "OCHO!" to people. She'd buy something, the shop person would give her change, and she'd smile real cute and confidently say,"OCHO!" After 3-4 times, and a corresponding number of confused looks in response, I asked her why she kept saying that. She thought it meant "Thank you!" We all laughed and got on with our trip.

  • A republican guy I used to work with was in huge support for ICE doing sweeps during trump's first administration. I asked him why he was in support of another armed gov't group going around cities asking for papers. He made it clear that they weren't going to go after people like him or me. Even after I pointed out what he was saying, he was OK with it. He was educated too. Just fucking morally awful people.

  • I enjoy Lemmy for the most part, but this popular narrative that you continue to correctly point out gets so tiring on here. The self-ownership, or self-sabotage by these self-righteous, elementary level critical thinking skills having, non-voters is sickening. If I didn't vote, I wouldn't take it as some moral victory against a fucked up system, I'd just accept my apathy.

  • I've let my friends know for many decades that if my wish comes true, and I am taken out by a meteor, I expect them to laugh their heads off and say cheers. I just wanted it to be a little micro-meteorite or something, but I'm OK with a large scale extinction size rock, I think.
