  • This has been my experience as well and I'd like to highlight your insightful point on how it seemed like both options were still trying to work towards a greater good decades ago.

Modern day conservatism seems entirely based on the ethos that inclusivity has gone too far. Since the world has become (in a very general and oversimplfying sense) more fair and inclusive over time, the ideology now feels inherently regressive.

  • What happens when a 'safe third country' starts adopting extractionary systems left behind by colonial empires that have, in part, held back third world economies for decades? Keep an eye on America to find out!

I'm sure America's substantial purchasing power will help prevent the rot from spreading within. Right? Right?!

  • I think he performed well in the debates. I wouldn't be surprised if the NDP has trouble filling his shoes. Though they may be able to by picking someone who is more 'demographically palatable' to the average Canadian.

  • I recall in the past Western nations would hold their social progress over emerging nations with an air of arrogance. But anyone who has been alive long enough understands that social progress is a function of Maslow's hierarchy of needs. When basic needs become more challenging to secure (as they have been in Canada and the US with affordability crises), social progress unfortunately takes the back burner.

Its often less about the people and more about the circumstance, though religion can be an important modifier.

  • White people may be detained to. I know one elderly white man who was made to repeat 'I love the US' three times before being allowed entry.

He did it and managed to get in unscathed so perhaps this is not the best example. But I imagine they would have detained him if he refused.

  • Global South wouldn't be a fair example since you'd have to factor in historical (and current) exploitation by Western nations. This tends to bolster corruption by having leaders sell out their population to align with Western prerogatives, enriching themselves in the process.

The social democracies in these nations is generally an attempt to protect the populace from Western capitalism moreso than domestic capitalism.

One example would be when the US overthrew the Shah in Iran back in the 50s because they socialized ownership of their oil reserves (previously owned through exploitation by a Western coporation). They staged a coup d'etat to install a pro Western leader so that the Western exploitation could continue. This inevitably led to the Iranian revolution, playing a significant role in Iran's current state as a theocracy.

The Global South, particularly South America, has countless of examples of this. The term banana republic is used to describe this very situation.

This is by no means an indictment on Western culture, just that the global rich will inevitably be in a position to manipulate the global not-so-rich for their own gain. Western nations are the global bourgeoisie.

Nordic nations are a better example of social democracies as they are not subject to the same type of meddling.

  • That's not true for every riding. Vote strategically using 338canada.com.

Based on current projections there is minimal risk of NDP winning enough seats to seriously hurt Liberals positions over Conservatives.

If your riding is leaning conservative but NDP is a close second, you should vote NDP, not Liberal (if that's consistent with your values).

A Liberal minority government is the best outcome of this election on my opinion. An unchecked Carney is a risk of over-privatization (though not nearly as dangerous as Conservatives).

  • Wasn't Harris their only option since Biden took so long to drop out?

She was the only one that could legally access campaign funds since there was no time for a primary.

It was either going to be him or her and both options were far from ideal.

  • More than 2/3rds of Canadians no longer see the US as an ally.

Scott Galloway recently asked Mark Carney (current prime minister of Canada) about this on his podcast.

The simple answer is you don't get to threaten another country's sovereignty and expect it not to be taken seriously.

  • Generally any tariff over 50% eats into profit margins sufficiently to end trade altogether.

Any escalation in tariffs above that is essentially just a symbolic dick measuring contest. China is being the adult in this situation by not engaging.

  • China has a much greater tolerance for pain than the US for a multitude of reasons. China is also in a position to bolster trading relationships with other nations since it has not gone scorched earth like the US.

The US holds disproportionate purchasing power for its size but it's still has far less than 50% global purchasing power. China and most other countries will find other partners to trade with while the US isolates itself further.

The only reason the US holds 20% of global purchasing power is because of mutually beneficial relationships with other countries. Purchasing power will slowly erode over time if Trump continues on his current path.

The US is really overestimating its leverage here and, being a fairly overmiliatarilized nation, one can only hope it doesn't turn to violence once things go south.

  • There's an element of racial injustice that needed to be highlighted by BLM so I don't know if including white victims of police brutality is the right approach but broadening to include other minorities would have helped continue their momentum and potentially catalyzed more meaningful change. Eventually challenging police brutality as a whole may have been an option but ignoring or underplaying racial inequality early on would have been essentially ignoring the reality of the situation.

  • Carney is essentially a conservative (except for socially) by most metrics.

He handled Trump really well in his first month but there is legitimate risk he has private (as opposed to public) interests at heart.

I guess that's better than the alternative (Poilievre) who will undoubtedly prioritise private interests. At least there's a chance Carney might do some good.

Hoping for a liberal minority government. Canada is very fortunate to have a third party (NDP) to keep their mainstream "progressive" party in check. We've seen how things have gone to shit in the US.
