  • Thanks, good advice. Will do a bit of research myself first I think.

Sadly no spare PC to try it on at the moment. I do have a laptop running Plex, but don't really want to mess with that right now.

Maybe I can buy a cheap one to have a play around with first.

    Cheers, much appreciated ๐Ÿ‘

  • Ah, I'm actually in the UK, so maybe this is good news for me! :-)

  • It's compatible, but I don't want to go to W11. Plus, I've been thinking for a while that I should check out Linux, but just never have the time.

  • Ugh. I'm going to have to seriously look at Linux, aren't I?

Absolutely no idea where to start with that, nor whether any of the software I need for work (or indeed anything else) is compatible, not how I'm going to find the time to learn all this.

EDIT - Just want to say thanks to everyone for all the helpful tips and advice below. Will make it my mission this summer to at least understand Linux better and work out if it's for me. Cheers, you lovely people ๐Ÿ‘

  • Infinite Jest by David Foster Wallace, with Catch-22 a very close second.

  • Still never been up to Dundee to check it out, but heard good things about it. I love the design of the building, very cool.

  • There's a great video on YouTube where some of the relevant scenes from the original, Zero Hour, are played alongside their equivalents in Airplane!. Some of it is basically word for word the same. Will try and find it and add as an edit...

Turns out there are lots of such videos! Not sure if this is the one I saw or not, but it's very similar, if not, https://youtu.be/8-v2BHNBVCs

  • Seems to be settled that he didn't cover it, but damn, I wish he had. Would love to hear that.

I wonder if people are getting mixed up with Cohen's song, The Partizan.

  • Ah, I never knew what that piece was. It's fantastic though, a perfect fit along with all of Badalamenti and Lynch's music.

My particular favourite is the weird drone of The Pink Room, turned up loud, but it's all good!

  • A few that spring to mind...

    Vertigo
    Psycho
Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me
    Mulholland Drive
    All 3 LOTR films
    Star Wars OT
    Indiana Jones (especially Raiders)
    The Sweet Smell of Success

  • Would that also make Frank Sinatra a failure?

What a bizarre line of thinking.

  • FFS.

What is that? An alarm control panel maybe?

  • Maybe yeah. There's probably a good reason somewhere, I just don't get it. All good ๐Ÿ‘

  • No :-)

But it still doesn't make sense for Boatswain to become Bosun to become Bo's'n.

Bos'n maybe, but the apostrophe between o and s isn't doing anything.

  • But Bo's'n uses one more character than Bosun?

    Sailing is mental.

  • Right, I see what you mean. Thanks ๐Ÿ‘

  • Jumping the shark was aโ€”metaphorically and in one case literally

Or two cases, if you're familiar with the work of Barry Zuckercorn, Attorney at Law.

  • Modern classics like Breaking Bad, The Wire, Community, and Bojack Horseman are notorious for "starting slow" and are often recommended with a disclaimer like "Give it a few episodes; I promise it gets good!"

This is a bit of a falsehood though, IMO.

Those shows (although I've never really watched BH) all ARE good from the start, as a rewatch will invariably reveal.

It's just that the worlds they conjure sometimes take a while to get used to. But once used to them, those early episodes are often absolute gold.

The Wire in particular has absolutely nothing to apologise for in any of its first few episodes (or indeed virtually all of the other ones) but for someone unfamiliar with the Baltimore drug markets and the hierarchical structures within and around them, it took me a few episodes to get up to speed.

It's not that it "gets" good after a few episodes. It's just that it might take a few to realise just how good it is.
