  • I still can't get used to Dev Tools in Firefox, even though they might be superior to Chrome's.

  • I suppose to drive engagement with fake thumbnails, the same thing they do when they put irrelevant things into your search results (thankfully that one is easily blocked by a uBlock filter).

  • I personally just don't get Discord and find it very annoying when it's the only means to communicate about something. And it certainly doesn't feel like a good replacement for Reddit due to the many reasons mentioned in this thread.

  • Most interactions in life are based on trust, so I don't think you can be totally safe. However, you can choose who you trust enough so you don't have to constantly worry. You might find this speech titled Reflections on Trusting Trust by Ken Thompson relevant.

Also see Linus' Law, which postulates that more people looking at code means bugs get noticed and fixed quicker, and large open source projects usually have a lot of people working on it.

  • Yeah, I only heard about BS😁 a few days ago while learning about the Fediverse. Also Jack Dorsey gives bad vibes.

  • It just seems like that might really be not cool to force such apps on someone struggling with a gambling addiction.

  • Mozilla seems to be pretty transparent. You can see their financial statement at State of Mozilla.

  • Yeah, seems like a US meme. And if an AirBnB room is priced the same as a hotel room (which is possible if you don't filter by price), why would one pick AirBnB?

  • I only visit it from a search engine when searching for something. It's still a vast repository of useful content.

  • Is stage fright a thing in online world? If so, that might be it.

  • I thought it had something to do with firms (the noun)...

  • Will it go the way of Clubhouse (remember that one?)? 🤔

  • The fact that one of those is some sort of a gambling app promotes that to very infuriating! 😡

  • That's insane, I didn't realize that tiny thing is a computer, let alone one running a tiny JcVM! Thank you for the educative link!

  • I knew about Bitwarden, but I thought how could a cloud based thing be truly open source, but they actually do have their backend on GitHub 🤯

  • Wow, I'm too young to even imagine paying for compilers!

  • git is the best, but sometimes I wonder if its total domination in the SCM market is really a good thing.

  • Most used for me is Firefox (in fact I'm so used to it, it didn't even come to mind until I saw so many replies mentioning it!).

    The favorite is probably git.

For the recently discovered stuff that would probably be the Astro frontend framework (and Svelte).

Also what a wonderful thread to discover stuff. Thank you all! ::: spoiler spoiler Also my first ever comment on Lemmy. 😎 :::
