  • "Christianity doesn't exist because God isn't real"

  • Oops, you're perfectly clear - I'm just tired and misread. Yes, Kbin is still federated with Threads indeed. :)

  • Maybe you have blocked Threads yourself? I'm not sure if Kbin even supports that (it's possible on Mastodon and Pixelfed), but I can see Mosseri's account just fine from my end!

  • It's hard to say how many active users are on Threads, but of 160 million registered users there's probably somewhere between 20 and 50 million (somewhat) active ones. That's more people than are signed up to Bluesky, as far as I can gather.

A lot of Twitter addicts are going to Bluesky, whereas Threads feeds off the huge user base of Instagram. Bluesky just looks more relevant seen from the Fediverse because it attracts a bunch of dorks.

  • You could try to follow a user from threads, such as @mosseri. I guess that won't be possible from instances where threads is defederated.

  • It's not exactly a deserted wasteland - it's not that easy to find somewhere to dump 170m tons of mining waste without affecting some ecosystem or another.

The fjords are pretty and symbolically nice, but the fact is that as long as there's a demand for minerals, they have to be dug from somewhere, and ecosystems are going to be affected by it. Moving the problem somewhere else doesn't solve anything.

It reminds me of that time we needed rocks for road construction in Norway, and we had decided all the mountains in the region were too precious to be destroyed for that kind of purpose. So we ended up buying vast quantities stones from China rather than using locally sourced products. Which is great - that way they can fuck up their nature instead.

If we don't want mining we just have to stop consuming. Moving problems out of sight doesn't solve anything.

  • It's a completely different product. Italian coffee does not have much going on in terms of flavour beyond bitter, and the only way of liking coffee there is to learn how to appreciate that. It's not easy for anyone who has learned to appreciate lighter roasts of coffee.

Eventually I learned to genuinely like it, but I also did live there for four years. And I would still use my Chemex rather than my Mocca at home 95% of the time.

  • I can accept that the two officers in the suicide watch were just incompetent fools. And I completely believe Epstein killed himself - the failure is merely that he was allowed to do so.

But he had already attempted suicide. And the whole damn world was dying for his testimony. Tell any old idiot off the street to watch him to make sure he don't kill himself, and they'd drink whatever amount of coffee it would take to watch him for a week straight without blinking an eye. Still these idiots manage to hire two morons for the job that cannot be arsed to do the bare minimum.

If you took the job seriously, considering the information Epstein had and the fact that he had already attempted suicide, wouldn't you make sure to put officers you knew you could trust on the job? Rather than the two only idiots on this planet who apparently don't care enough about uncovering a network of child rapists to do even the bare minimum of their jobs?

Sure, it's probably just idiots all down the line, and just a funky accident that it ended up serving the interests of the rich, powerful, and morally corrupt. Even so, it just doesn't sit right with me, and I don't think it ever will.

  • It's just that there's a limit to how much convenient fucking incompetence I'm willing to believe in, and this story is pushing that limit pretty fiercely.

  • It's like not even the trolls are making an effort any more. What has the world come to. :(

  • And then comes the conspiracy theories. Which will happen if either of them die any time soon anyway. Because what are the odds of old men randomly dying, right? There must be a conspiracy!

Trump having a heart attack before the election would provide enough conspiracy theories for a lifetime, and it honestly seems about as likely as him not having a heart attack.

  • Yeah, the adds take up some time, but I still find the overall experience less annoying than I did with Duolingo last time I used it. The push towards human interaction, which Duolingo has actively pushed away from, is also welcome.

  • No offence, but I will never be confused by anyone's decision to defederate with Hexbear.

  • The difference between Italy and the rest of the world in terms of espresso culture is night and day. If you want a decent espresso in most of Europe you have to go to some hipster obsessing over every tiny detail - if you go to a random bar they will give you an espresso shot the size of a glass of milk. I always go for a lungo in Italy, but most espressos I get in other countries still feel a bit ridiculous to me.

On the positive side, the obsessive hipsters might actually be on to something - there's a lot of potential for flavour in the espresso that is generally not explored in Italy. Italian beans tend to be very dark roasted, meaning that the brewing of the coffee is very forgiving but there is less potential for more exciting flavours. Then again, people who want a fruity cup of coffee are arguably better off sticking to other extraction methods.

And there's certainly quality differences in Italy as well! Though I feel like it often boils down to the basics such as keeping the machine clean and preventing soap taste.

  • Portafilters for a single shot is pretty standard equipment, but it's also a bit controversial among the snobs. A lot of baristas will stick to making double shots and just throw the second one away if nobody orders an espresso while it's still fresh. In a moderately busy bar excess espresso shots are not really a problem.

  • It depends. In terms of accuracy, I've seen new streets missing in OSM that are updated in Google Maps, but also the other way around.

If you want to find korean restaurants or cheap hairdressers, Google Maps unfortunately still has an edge over OSM. If you want to find hiking trails, it's the other way around.

OSM is missing things like satellite images and Street View, which is undeniably useful sometimes.

I wouldn't say it's worse, but it's better only for certain use cases, and worse for others. :)

  • Kagi supports bangs (similar to DuckDuckGo), so searching for "!osm 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue NW" will take you straight to the White House.

The official web site of Open Street Maps is not exactly Google Maps in terms of usability, but it's a functional map. :)

  • Unfortunately, it often means going straight to maps.google.com or the Google Maps app - it's the main Google service I still haven't gotten rid off in my life. If I need something a bit more simple I'll check Open Street Maps, either through a desktop app or Organic Maps on my phone. If I need hiking trails Organic Maps is clearly superior to Google Maps, so then there's no real question.
