  • I have used it for maybe a year and I never had any problems. Then again, I'm hardly a power user, so it makes sense that other people might have different experiences. :)

  • It's dumb, but if it catches on we can begin referring to his Chinese colleague as Poohtin. So I'm all for it.

  • If they're from F-Droid you're good; if you're on Google Play I doubt they'll update anything to get more permissions without your consent.

However, if the developer has taken a turn for the worse (which this post seems to indicate), you might not receive any more updates for your F-Droid software, and you might get to a point where you don't want to install updates from Google Play. Software that cannot be updated is generally not a good thing.

Furthermore, these apps deal with somewhat sensitive information by default, and I wouldn't want to use apps developed by a company I don't trust if I don't absolutely have to. :)

  • Yeah, sorry, didn't mean to come across as aggressive or dismissive of your point. Reading it back I realize "?!" comes across as a bit much.

I'm just a bit tired that every time we learn in some new way that the Republican party consists of a bunch of authoritarians we're supposed to act as if we just learned something new.

  • "Turns out"?! Trump was literally recorded calling around threatening people not to count votes. The effort to rig the election was made entirely in the open, the Republicans were basically talking about it on Fox News.

  • Thanks! Needed a replacement for Simple Contacts after this, Connect You seems like a much better app anyway. :)

    1. You don't like the Google app
    2. You don't want to use Google apps out of principle
    3. You're using a version of Android where Google apps are not installed by default, so you need to install something
  • There are a bunch of those "simple" apps on F-droid, such as Simple Contacts, Simple Calendar, and Simple Camera. I cannot find Simple Gallery in F-droid any more, it seems to have been replaced by its Fossify equivalent already.

In light of this, it could be an idea to check if you have any of those apps installed and consider replacing them with an alternative. I was using Simple Contacts until now (only listed as "Contacts" in my apps), so I guess it's time to make some changes.

  • A lot of Israelis are blaming Netanyahu for the war, the Supreme Court of Israel struck down his constitutional reform, and thanks to him Israel can no longer take the support of their oldest allies completely for granted. The relationship between the US and Israel was already at an all-time low before all this thanks to Netanyahu being a piece of shit.

Of course, there's also the flip side of the coin: Netanyahu has always had a fear based platform, and the political climate lends itself well to that at the moment. There's always a rally behind the flag effect, and elections are still far away. So even if he loses the next election in a landslide that might be too late. Frankly it has been too late for many years already.

So all in all I agree in not being incredibly optimistic.

  • Only the purest are good enough for the People's Front of Judea.

  • I guess the closing footnote of the blog post summarizes it well:

from the point of view of many leftists, they're not very far left, and liberals are, in fact, right wing

Trying to place people as left/right in an international forum like this is a complete waste of time. I'm writing from a Polish instance, where communist symbols are banned and the political left/right dimension looks completely different from my Scandinavian home country. In my traditionally left-leaning home country I'm a leftist. By the minds of many Americans I'm a stupid centrist because I'm not ideologically pure enough - Social Democracy is just capitalism with a human face etc. And don't get me started on the Russians and the Chinese.

For some people, if you reject Leninism you're right wing.

  • Or, even better, the beginning of Isreal's transformation into a country where people see through the bullshit of the far-right and elect decent leaders, leaving Netanyahu to rot in prison.

  • Good luck! Aesthetically I find Geary to be the best client for GNOME, but Thunderbird has more advanced features and broader support. :)

  • Thunderbird still isn't too much of a looker, but it got a lot better recently after they added the vertical layout and made a bunch of smaller improvements. I've been using it for a few months now (after having avoiding it for maybe a decade), and I'm pretty enthusiastic about it.

  • Distributions like Linux Mint and Ubuntu don't have much of a learning curve at all these days. If you're curious, you could install them on an USB drive and play around with it without installing.

I've been using Linux for well over a decade now, but I'm not an advanced user at all. I mostly just like it because it just works.

  • It did create a bit of a splash back when Mastodon got together and played a huge part in saving the Texas Observer.

As for being used of a source of what random people are talking about, I think that's further off for three reasons:

    1. The biggest platform is a better source
    2. It doesn't go well with decentralisation - you want to report what's going on inside one big, centralised service
    3. It tends to be pretty worthless lazy journalism. The journalists who have been converted to Mastodon tend to avoid writing sloppy pieces about what people are talking about online - they rejected Twitter for a reason.
  • "We Distribute" launches Decentered, a Fediverse podcast

There's nothing wrong with your title per se, it just takes a second to realise what should be read as words and what's names. But people are intelligent, they'll manage. :)
