  • I had no idea The Witness was made by an acclaimed developer; I played it because I saw a Youtube video titled "The Witness—A Great Game You Shouldn't Play" from a Youtuber I liked, and decided that despite his warning I needed to play the game before watching the video. Since I never ended up finishing it, I also never got around to watching the video, lol.

I really liked it because "solve these puzzles without being told what the rules are or what counts as part of a puzzle" is like my favorite genre of puzzle game.

  • I mean that's the problem, isn't it? What is it about these assholes like Tate that appeals to young men?

  • Is it copyright strikes? That's not what the article says.

While the Pokemon bans would arouse suspicion of The Pokemon Company taking action, the Pokemon publisher is not believed to be involved with the bans. Several of the affected content creators, including the previously mentioned PokeRev, have previously worked with The Pokemon Company in an official capacity. Many were even invited as guests to major Pokemon events like the Pokemon World Championships. Neither Instagram nor parent company Meta has commented on the unexpected wave of bans against the Pokemon content creators.

And if you watch the embedded video, his ban message just says "Community Guidelines" and it sounds like nobody has been able to get a straight answer about it. Also, he got his account back automatically after verifying his contact info, and he doesn't know why that worked either because he didn't change anything, while some other people with the same ban message instead received automatic appeal rejections, which is wild because nobody can tell what the difference is between accounts that got auto-reinstated and the ones that got auto-rejected.

There is someone in the Youtube comments claiming that usernames containing Poke, Poki, or Pokemon are getting auto-flagged by a bot, which sort of makes sense (except that it doesn't explain the differing appeal outcomes) and was something he speculated in the video, but they are cagey about their sources so I'm consigning that to Youtube comments rumormill until I see better info.

  • So, I don't use Mastodon for the same reason I never used Twitter (I don't need a microblog and I'd rather read other people's regular-sized blogs), but point 2 sounds like a problem. How do you decide who to follow, when you're working from a blank slate? I presume you need to see several of someone's posts before you can know if you'd like to follow them, so if Mastodon doesn't show you any posts by default how do you get started?

  • I actually love PoE's inventory management, but I play the game "wrong." I hardly ever trade, except to grab a cheap unique here or there that enables a build. I pick up and manually ID all the items that could be useful, even knowing that there's only like a 1/10,000 chance that they actually are. I pick up all currency, even portal scrolls. I clear maps at a pace that might be described as "puttering." And typically I RIP early in maps and start the league over, so most of my playtime is in the story, where successive characters can pick through my stash for junk my old character was hoarding for no reason, that might now have some use for levelling a different build.

    It's probably my favorite ARPG.

  • Oh damn, I got the rabies vaccine when I worked part time at a vet school because they offered it. They were like "Uh but you're IT, you don't really need it, so you could skip the hassle..." and I was like "Why would I turn down an opportunity to get a vaccine? You're paying for it, right? Reprogramming my immune system is awesome, sign me up!"

No wonder they looked annoyed, LMAO.

  • I'm annoyed that Iizuka is probably right that pixel art only appeals to core audiences, because as a member of said core audience all I really want from Sonic is more games in the classic style. It's like when the Final Fantasy producer, Yoshi-P, said turn-based combat doesn't appeal to modern gamers. Like, maybe it doesn't, but it appeals to me. :P

  • I seem to recall that Bend Bars/Lift Gates checks in AD&D often got generalized into a sort of "Feats of Strength" check, so I think this passes.

  • I used the official app, but I didn't have to wait to experience a disruption to know that this was the last straw. I switched to Lemmy just prior to the protest and never looked back. Regardless of the actual dispute, I'm not going to use a site run by someone who so obviously thinks as little of their users as spez does. Even I have more self-respect than that!

  • I feel like the art part of my brain must be somehow underdeveloped, because I'm looking at the screenshot right now and I'm like... it's a face? What else should it look like? I can see that the faces in Skyward Sword are in a different style, but I don't know what "better" and "worse" mean in this context, other than "I like one better than the other." And this happens every time topics about game graphics/art styles come up.

  • The previous administration is still running the town, so how is Braxton going to arrest them when they control the police force?

He became mayor because he was the only one to qualify for election in 2020, because the incumbent declined to submit paperwork (because they weren't planning to actually hold an election; the last proper mayoral election was at least 60 years ago, according to the article). The city council responded by holding an unannounced (and probably illegal) special election to re-elect the previous mayor, which no one knew about so Braxton couldn't apply for it. So the previous mayor has simply continued doing the job, with the backing of the council and all his officials. That's why Braxton is bringing a lawsuit against them.

  • It's a space station.

  • It's crazy how I can turn the illusion off or on by looking at the bottom or top of the image, respectively. Every time I move my eyes up or down there's a "perception flip" moment.

  • I was like "What stickied thread?" Apparently if your sort is set to Top (time limit), you won't see stickied threads unless they were created within that time. (I've been using Top 6 Hours.)

  • In the end it's certainly because at least some of the executives making donation decisions are bigots, but here's my attempt to come up with an explanation for why the corporation as a whole would view these donations as strategic:

They perceive that electing Republicans is beneficial for their business, and the Republican party uses bigotry to motivate their base. Hate against queer people is the R's cause du jour. Funding hate groups means those groups produce more bigot propaganda, which makes the Republican electoral strategy more effective, which makes it more likely that Republican candidates will be elected who are perceived to be more amenable to deregulation that would allow banks to increase profits at everyone else's expense.

So from this perspective, banks see queer people as a group they can extract value from, both through rainbow washing initiatives to attract them as customers and talent and (as seen here) as a target they can attack in pursuit of political power, which is equivalent to profit.

  • When I was last working on sci-fi writing (for a game I was running), I came to the conclusion that most places that are in contact with galactic society (in a setting with FTL travel and communication) would probably have one calendar that is standardized for official use, and at least one that is local to the planet. Systems with multiple inhabited worlds might have a system-wide calendar in addition to the individual calendars.

On the other hand, people living on ships, space stations, or remote outposts might track everything in standard time.

Dealing with characters who negotiate contracts across interstellar distances and frequently move between ships and planets made keeping track of things like "what time is it planetside if we rest for 8 standard hours on the ship?" and "if we agree that this contract in another system begins in 30 standard days, but we're occupied here for another local week, how much time do we have for travel?" enough of an annoyance that I went looking for a program that could automatically track these things, but I don't remember if I ever found one.

  • Honestly I just enabled all of them on the grounds that blocking too many things is probably preferable to not blocking enough.

  • Do you know if there is a good lemmy community for discussing Kenshi? I was about to go on a huge tangent about my experience with the game and stopped myself because this comment section probably isn't the right place. ^^;;

  • But when will science be able to turn me into a catboy?

  • At first I thought there was something strange about the "s," but I couldn't put my finger on it. So I looked at the other fonts they considered and I realized I didn't like the "s" in those either. Then I looked at the font on the webpage and realized all "s"es look wrong to me.

I guess I just have to live this way now.
