I did. You also had to pay $40 to play the game though.

There is not anymore. All characters are unlocked for free.

They're not essential to playing the game. Just don't buy them.

What macrotransactions? The game is free and the only this that's monetized is cosmetics.

For the love of god, increase it to something reasonable then implement yearly increases based on inflation so that I never have to hear about this again.

I did see TMZ reported that but I never saw it confirmed. I think that's definitely plausible. The other poster is implying that the whole thing was fake, which at this point I think we can for sure rule out.
