The even brighter side of it is that it should be easier to spot these companies when job hunting.

IMO: Demand higher wages and iron clad contracts from them because they already demonstrated how they feel about paying people.

They’ll surely cut anyone they can again as soon as they can.

The Steamdeck is actually a great device for this simply because it is a very functional pc in desktop mode. Throw in a Bluetooth mouse and keyboard, with even a generic dock and it can rival most laptops, especially with the added video capabilities it already has.

I find myself using it as a pc almost as much as a gaming device, just because it works so well for both.

I’m not convinced you would need to rise up. Just collectively stop going to work. The house of cards falls pretty quickly on capitalism if there are no workers to exploit.

All the power is in the populace if they all agree to take it back together.

It’s the laziest thing a person could do really. Just stay at home, ration food and wait until the billionaire folks lose their minds.

Couldn’t agree with you more. I think it is vitally important Canadians as a whole continue to reflect on the mistakes and unthinkable things done in the past, to make sure we do everything we can to prevent anything like them in the future.

If we all held onto, and strived for, the Canada we remembered as kids, maybe we can carve a newer, better future for all Canadians, present citizens and those destined to become Canadian.

We need to look to the authoritarian, old school countries as examples of what happens if we aren’t vigilant. To lean into and integrate our cultural and political differences as a source of strength, not division.

In my opinion, only then can we really become true Canada.

I’m not advocating for the US. The idea of arguably the most aggressive regimes in the world somehow coordinating the timing of their next big moves is just a bit terrifying to me.

I agree with you, but my tinfoil hat is telling me to dig a shelter, preserve food and start making ammo. You know, for game hunting.

I keep getting this sinking feeling that this is all leading up to a precise and coordinated attack of evil.

Russia bombards the EU, the US attacks Greenland and Canada, while Israel finally bulldozes Gaza and Iran. China takes Taiwan and the south sea.

All at the same time so NATO is overwhelmed and can’t decisively defend it all without risking spreading too thin. No matter what happens, one of the bad guys gains ground.

I honestly have no idea if this is even possible, it’s based on a dream I had a few weeks ago.

Disturbing thought though.

IMO Norm’s magic was in his delivery more than his jokes. He was a master of comedic pauses that were often masked as stumbles or as if he forgot the joke and was trying to remember it.

He could drag a joke like this out for 5 minutes and have you laughing the whole time.

Truly a master of his craft. Or a natural joke teller. We will never really know. And he probably wouldn’t tell anyone even if was still here.

I miss the guy.

What I suggest/have done:

1. Rent a cheap VPS in a non-five eyes country that comes with a static ipv4.
2. SSH on random port with certificate auth only. No root, no password auth.
3. setup WireGuard server with random port.
4. firewall block all incoming except ssh and WireGuard port at first.
5. set home server to connect via wireguard as sole client to VPS.
6. individually add any ports you want to go to the home server from the internet as NAT forwarded ports. Basically WWW -> VPS -> Home.
7. have a separate WireGuard VPN for outgoing from the home server.
8. profit?

But it’s crazy complicated. At least it was for me. Not for the faint hearted imo.

You are 100% correct. The issue isn’t the infrastructure per se, but the usage of it.

By decentralizing, I guess I mean finding a way to remove the ability for a mega company like Google from being able to dominate the playfield.

The percentage of internet users that can or will bother to run their own DNS is way too low.

How easily DNS can be manipulated by any network for the average end user is the blessing and the curse it seems.

Can someone considerably smarter than me, with time to spare, please just find a way to federate/decentralize DNS.

I can fathom that it is complicated, maybe even impossible in the current setup, but the internet we all grew to love dies a little bit more each time the mouth breathers try to restrict it on behalf of capitalism.

Maybe remembering ip addresses can fill the void of not having to remember phone numbers anymore?

I feel like if the supernatural exists as portrayed by popular culture, then societies around the globe must have had a coordinated and lasting effort to snuff it out at every turn and would have to meticulously continue those efforts even today.

We could debate that the crusades, Salem witch trials, burning of the library in Alexandria, etc are all proof of this effort, but how could anyone really prove it? And would knowing it is real and it is just not accessible make things any better?

Honestly, as much as the idea of controlling forces not inherently responsive to my own command is intriguing. Realistically it would add a whole new level of messed up to our already botched attempt at existence as a species.

I prefer to think of magic as simply the science we haven’t yet discovered.

I don’t think this is as shocking as that headline wants it to be.

Other countries have proven this repeatedly, along with the fact that forced static learning and homework at young ages isn’t the way. Learning through play is far more effective.

Use it to hire most of the best minds to be found with the sole purpose of creating an expansive infrastructure to provide regular people the means to organize as one.

The undertaking would be staggering. Reviewing all the known history of man, considering all the languages, cultures, failures and successes.

Researching and combining all known technologies.

All to set the groundwork for a global union of human kind to be able to collectively counteract the disease that is the upper most classes.

After much daydreaming on the subject. I think this is the way of long term existential survival for the human race.
