  • Maybe in America, but in most other places homelessness isn't demonised nearly as much (also America is probably the only place that will make you homeless if you get seriously ill).

I think somewhere in the Nordic states, they've trialled UBI in an area and I think with success.

Edit: So the results are a mixed bag, as you would expect, but generally people were much happier with UBI.

  • Um... I'm Australian and we just kicked out all the pro-Trump candidates. We also get to pick from a really long list of parties and even get to pick exactly who in the party we want. Voting is compulsory and because of that, voting has to be made accessible: it's on a Saturday, you can vote early and polling stations are set up literally everywhere, even in the most remote locations.

America has more agency than a dictatorship. That's a very low bar.

    Edit: also Trump vs Xi.

One has no goal for the country except to line his own pockets and the other has very strong goals for the country (involving actually making their country an economic powerhouse).

One sees himself as a strict father of his country and the other sees himself as king.

If it was a decision between Trump and Xi, I'd pick Xi any day of the week. It's a shit choice but I'd rather a leader than a puppet.

  • Yep, I'm not doubting that.

I have to say, though, my most favourite American accent is the Minnesota one. Fargo helped make it all sound very endearing. Unsure how they pronounce mirror. Perhaps it's 'meer'.

  • Because voting is not compulsory in your country so there's no incentive to provide accessibility for people to vote.

Face it, you need a different system. Not going to happen without violence though... It's a very sad state of affairs.

  • The way 'herbs' or 'erbs' (as some pronounce it) drives me absolutely nuts.

Also, 'mirror' where it sounds like 'meer' drives me nuts.

I definitely prefer British English. Love reading the old Agatha Christie books. E.g. "My word!" The colonel ejaculated, "I do believe that she's dead!"

  • Agreed but let's be honest, that would've relied on people voting for their best interests and, as always, Australians generally vote governments out. The safest way to vote out Liberal is to vote Labor and, so, we have a majority.

  • All of them. Limit the size, ban acquisitions. Break up monopolies. They've never been good for everyone and just become exploitative.
