  • 3rd gen here. Didn’t care for any televised sports. So hockey and football (Leafs and the Argos) was a great way to put me into a stupor. Wasn’t even interested in playing.

I remember my dad taking me to watch a game once. I was more interested in watch the scoreboard than the game itself. I was probably 6-8 at the time.

  • and what looks to be some sort of dried landlord repair fluid.

Not that the landlord needs to be really broken before you’re able to see the benefits of using the repair fluid.

For slightly broken landlords, don’t waste perfectly good repair fluid on them.

  • Back in the Before Times of Reddit, there was a guy who knew quite a bit about vacuums. Did an AMA at least a few times.

Long story short, powders such as baking soda or any of the common ‘freshness’ options damage vacuums. Avoid using them.

  • I’ll be the dense lunkhead and ask/say the obvious:

    https://www.google.com/search?q=find+a+Hollywood+movie

I’m guessing you were trying to find a specific, older movie?

OT, but now I’m disappointed to have discovered that LMGTFY’s SSL throws a NSURLErrorDomain error. I would have used that instead.

  • You’re older than I am, but not by a lot.

My guidance counsellor moment was probably around 1975-76. I was deep into comp sci; a friend would tell me years later that the teacher knew less than at least a couple of us. I would ask him a question, he would say he’d look into it. Unbeknownst to me, he wandered over to the other advanced student (Phil) and put my question to him. Phil would reply, teacher would make his way back to me and share the knowledge. The same thing would happen if Phil had a question; teacher would come to me for the answer.

My friend watched this whole thing with amusement.

Now for the GC moment. Career counselling.

I went to the GC’s office full of electric enthusiasm, hoping to learn of the great CS things that awaited me after uni. I told him about my love and fascination with computers. He had the reaction, the kind a parent has when they need to tell their child their favourite pet has died. He told me that it might be fun and make for an interesting hobby, but that there were no computer-related careers. And that I should consider another vocation. I was crushed.

I even spent some years in university studying things that were unrelated to CS. My career didn’t get any traction until about 10 years after HS, unsurprisingly in the field I was most passionate about.

Anyway, I’ve been a computer professional for about 35 years now.

  • Big fan of douchecanoe. Been using it for many years.

I once dropped ‘douchecanoe’ in a convo with my manager in reference to someone we both knew outside of the company, without thinking. She gave me one of those “hol’ up - what did you just say?” reactions. New to her, she was amused.

  • Also when you have a chance, check out:

Never Surrender: A Galaxy Quest Documentary

but not until after you've seen GQ :)

After I'd watched the documentary, I realized there were some clever nuances/cinematography, etc that I had missed the first couple times I'd watched GQ. Ended up watching GQ soon after that once again.

It's one of those quirky movies that's worth rewatching from time to time. Like The Princess Bride.

  • Proper air-drying is key. Gotta maximize the surface area. If there's a gentle breeze nearby, all the better.

Living somewhere where you can use a clothesline would fit this most times (ie, if it's not raining all the time).
