  • I’m personally more a fan of curses of wicked inconvenience.

Eg, “May you never find the pebble pressing into the sole of your foot, even after you’ve removed your shoe and your sock”

or, “May you always run out of toilet paper when you most need it, every time, no matter where you are”

continues to fantasise about other such curses

  • What the autotldr bot didn’t capture is this:

In 2016, the officer who shot him, then-Const. James Forcillo, was found not guilty of second-degree murder in connection with the first volley of bullets, which court heard was fatal. He was convicted of attempted murder for the second volley, which was fired when Yatim was already on the ground.

Forcillo was sentenced to six and a half years behind bars and was granted full parole in 2020.

I’m not entirely clear on where “homicide” falls on the “second-degree murder” / “attempted murder” scale, though. To me, homicide has always meant the murdery type of murder. What does it mean for Forcillo?

  • Just wanted to throw something else into the discussion.

    I’ll preface this that a) I’m no economist, and b) I’m Canadian.

Let’s harken back to circa 1996 when the Quebec separatists were once again threatening to leave. Also, they were going to keep the Canadian dollar as their currency.

I was having a chat with a coworker, who did have a minor in finance. He pointed out that if Quebec separated and kept the Cdn dollar, their fiscal policy would be dictated by Canada.

So reframing this for Texas: if they seceded, would they keep the USD? If not, how quickly would they be able to design their own currency and mint it? What exchange rate would they use for their citizens and how quickly could they get the new currency into the hands of everyone, including out in the boonies?

I’m completely glossing over any considerations around what might happen if they kept the USD.

  • As a somewhat recent arrival to NZ, I found it interesting — starting with our rental car — that the speed limit is displayed on your dashboard. It changes colour as soon as you go 1 km over the limit.

All very cool. The most notable issue with this is there are sections of roads where this doesn’t work at all.

That said, there is a LOT of traffic calming here.

There’s still the occasional assclown that goes way over the limit. Unsurprisingly, that usually happens on long, straight roads without traffic calming.

  • Wild guess, reading between the lines:

Dad had an extramarital affair. His squeeze got preggers. Dad is suddenly pro-choice.

Mom finds out about the affair and the pregnancy and is now mad at dad.

OP only knows what his parents have shared, intentionally or not.

  • But Americans aren’t allowed to read the story anymore — by order of a court in India.

While the article starts out with what seems to be a decidedly “this is targeting Americans” bent, further reading clarifies that it’s a global thing, not specific to Americans at all.

  • A similar suggestion to the other poster:

Try relocating one of the troublesome units to someplace nearby but not mounted to the ceiling. The top of a bedroom dresser, the floor, a bathroom countertop, the top step of the stairs, halfway down the stairs, hanging from a wall (picture hook)… just get creative.

And since you haven’t mentioned it, I presume these are all smoke detectors? Do you have any heat detectors or carbon monoxide detectors installed?
