apologies don’t mean you’re sorry… people that express a sincere point of view, are called out on their shit take, and then apologise to save face are still pieces of shit: they didn’t apologise because they realised the things they said were wrong; they apologised because they got called out and want to fix it
i’m not saying that apologies from public figures can’t be sincere, but the bar is pretty damn high because what they stand to lose by not apologising is so large that people tend to take a hit to their ego - saying something they don’t mean - rather than express their true feelings
(i feel like i do need to start flagging that im an australian citizen, living in australia so this… kinda ain’t my place… but also, over the last 70 years the US has made it the worlds place without giving us much of a choice… point being, providing external POV without actually having intimate knowledge of culture etc etc)
i can agree with that: deal with the problem at hand… but what happens in 4 years time? let’s assume that the US doesn’t descent into complete dictatorship for an indeterminate amount of time (because if so any discussion is irrelevant)… what do you do then? you’ve won: do you live and let live? or what if MAGA tries to stay in power and causes a violent conflict? from what i understand, a lot of the current situation is buoyed because you allowed the confederates to maintain their identity during reconstruction
if the democrats get voted in in 4 years, the problem isn’t gone: the same people that voted trump didn’t suddenly gain a new found empathy for their fellow man… do you let it slide because the current crisis is dealt with and through a combination of luck and incompetence it somehow worked out?
A vast majority on lemmy should learn this aswell.
from what i’ve seen, yes people are angry but people are willing to accept apologies that aren’t based entirely in leopards eating faces… you don’t get a pass for your shitty ignorant behaviour just because that behaviour comes to bite you in the ass
you get to apologise and have it accepted if you’ve seen the harm that’s been done to other people and are genuinely remorseful
they’re getting downvotes because they’re calling someone out on grammar issues while being completely and verifiably wrong in not only the technical, but also the colloquial sense
australia has the opposite in many ways… we have a thing called tall poppy syndrome where we internally believe everyone should be equal so much that we sometimes tend to tear people down for doing better than others
same argument as people make with FOSS: if you don’t like it, you can submit a change… it’s an absolute shit argument: not everyone has the time, energy, or drive to trawl sources for new content… that doesn’t absolve the people that do of social responsibility
this is meant to be read without the emotional loading to the words that we’ve been conditioned with: ie X is implicitly bad… these are just words, whose meaning has more depth than what they actually define
terrorism is
the use of violence against non-combatants to achieve political or ideological aims
violence is
an act of physical force that causes or is intended to cause harm
arson is violence
and this particular act of violence is intended to achieve political or ideological aims (musk is a political figure albeit not an official government employee, and this is in response to his public political acts)
now, i’d argue it’s not “against non-combatants”, but perhaps it is? is destruction of a persons property constitute violence against them? it’s at least psychological - trying to scare/influence for sure
let’s not kid ourselves though: it is what it is… it’s just ridiculous that this is what they pursue while pardoning jan 6 offenders… the issue isn’t that they’re labelling this domestic terrorism. the issue is that it’s singled out because fElon asked daddy dictator
hmmm interesting idea… pass fascist trigger laws that automatically sanction countries for certain kinds of backsliding. not specifics - gotta leave it vague so that fascists can’t just technically work around it
it’s a stalling tactic… they’ll never agree to any of that but trump, being as downright arrogant as he is, assumes that it’s a starting position for a deal (“who wouldn’t want to join the USA?!?!”)… he’s a strongman, so he will try and get what he wants no matter what - the goal is to put him off from taking it by force for as long as possible or indefinitely
same thing with taiwan and china - you don’t say no; you just leave it ambiguous to placate the bully so they don’t feel like they “need” to respond to avoid “looking weak”
that said, i ain’t canadian or american… im absolutely on canadas side 100%, buying canadian products wherever i can, stopping consuming US products and services… perhaps placating is distasteful, or against the way yall feel your country should apply its values… whatever your country’s way of dealing with it, i really truly hope it works and leaves trump unable to hurt everyday canadians 🇦🇺🧡🇨🇦
