Facebook can bootstrap their product with federated content made by users who are in the fediverse because they don’t want to support a company like Facebook. Star Trek The Next Generation has one of the best, if not the best, finale to an ongoing episodic tv series ever. I don’t want to compare it to the kind of shows that are just one big story split up into hour long chunks, because that’s a totally different style of show and many have good endings. But for shows that are mostly separate, TNG did it better than any show I can think of.

It did a fair, but not gratuitous amount of fan service, and it was all in service of the actual plot. And it still somehow felt like a good episode of the show. But it also perfectly bookended the show back with the very first episode of the show. It was as close to perfect as you can get.

And this isn’t just on principle either. I know a cis heterosexual woman who has short, but still feminine hair and tattoos and people repeatedly call her “they” sometimes and it bothers her. And it’s weird because the solid odds are that she prefers “she/her” but people call her “they” which points out that she doesn’t look conventional.

Edit: the best thing you can do is to ask literally everyone you meet, or just use he or her the traditional way and quickly and briefly apologize if corrected.

I don’t know how we fix the absentee mod problem either. Sure you can create the community on a C new instance, but then it’s even less likely to be successful. I Lemmy is on and I’ll never go back to Reddit, but I don’t see anything replacing it 1:1 the way Lemmy is trying to. It took Reddit a decade to mature in regards to niche communities. Lemmy has a ton of barriers already such as the roadblocks put up by absentee mods and the difficulty in finding communities at all. Lemmy’s All feed seems to bury new communities even worse than Reddit does, but that’s just an unscientific impression.

Because meta will have the most users and will prioritize their own content.

Only if a site like join-Lemmy.org can be promoted on every instance and actually direct you to a server that isn’t overloaded and is fully federated.

Right now, it directs you to sadly overloaded servers that are terrible choices.

If that doesn’t happen, then some big instance needs to scale up with its popularity and be well funded by someone for some reason.

This seems like a non sequitur: what is good about only profitable ventures getting funding? These unprofitable ventures were creating good jobs and providing enjoyable and sometimes useful products to consumers for low prices. So why is it good that funding is drying up?

The user bubble has popped now that investors started questioning why the fuck they’ve been investing huge amounts of money into companies that make no money just because they have lots of users. With that investment money drying up, these tech companies are desperate to start making a profit so they can survive and grow their value still.

TLDR: investment in unprofitable tech companies is drying up and companies that aren’t profitable are scrambling to make money.

That same strategy can be used to police the fediverse. If policing is possible, then the last panel of the comic is possible.

They could defederate servers that don’t do exactly what they want and servers that are defederated might capitulate. The last frame is very possible and we’ve already seen it start to happen with thedonald on shitjustworks.

Edit: that said, I know the Donald comes from Reddit so it’s not the best example. But it’s an example of the method by which the last panel could happen.
