  • I live in Canada. I used to visit the States probably every other year. Then Trump was elected in 2016, and I stopped going. Then covid happened, so I figured I'd wait a bit longer. And now it'll be another 3 years until I even consider it, but that largely depends on what happens in that time span. It's not out of the question to just never visit again. There are plenty of other places in the world that I haven't seen yet.

  • when he says that trump wouldn’t win election without him, I wish people would respond that he is full of bullshit and trump alone would win anyway, pushing him to say more.

I believe that Trump may not have won without him. He weaponized twitter to push misinformation against the Dems and in favour of Trump. I don't know if the result of that can be quantified in such a way that we'd know for sure whether it changed the outcome, but it certainly had an impact.

  • It's not organized by left and right. It's organized by percentage of people who have an unfavorable view of Israel.

It would be weirder for 0% to be on the right and 100% to be on the left. Also, in theory, it's possible for those three dots to be in any order on the line.

  • I think adjusting by municipality is a bad idea.

A flat basic income across the country promotes migration to lower COL areas. An adjusted basic income promotes migration to higher COL areas in order to get a bigger income. While different areas having different COLs is pretty unavoidable, I don't think making high-COL areas more attractive is a good idea.

I'm also not a huge fan of adjusting for couples vs. single people. I get why they do it, it's an easy way to save money. But the actual expenses of you living with a roommate (as you suggested) compared to you living with a roommate that you're also sleeping with, don't change very much. (I have similar complaints about household income being used for basically everything except taxes, but that's a little further off topic.)

  • What did they expect? They made this decision during the holidays. Then they need to design, build, and deploy a website. If they have employees capable of doing this, they probably already had plans to work on something else. And if they didn't have the employees, they need to hire them.

Unless the whole idea was to just throw up a Geocities page titled "Dead People", these things take time to do properly and respectfully.

  • Having one disability doesn't mean they are affected by this change. The article says 77,000 people collect disability in Alberta, which is about 1.8% of Albertans.

That said, 27% is a much bigger number than I expected, even for any amount of disability. Do you have a link to that data? I'd be curious to know more about it.

  • People with disabilities are a very small minority, and it's impossible to know if they voted conservative. This isn't a leopards eating faces moment, it's a fuck you I've got mine.

Obviously they were already in a shitty situation being disabled in Alberta, but this is just one more sign that Albertans don't care about them.

  • Much like HBC, Canadian Tire has a lot of overpriced retail. They don't overlap much beyond kitchenware though.

I guess this gets Canadian Tire into the full department store business like Walmart, Target, or Sears. Now they just need to start selling groceries (again).

  • They can't actually leave. The lands are indigenous and have not been ceded to the province or the crown. There are treaties allowing the crown to use them (in this case, as the province of Alberta), but basically it's as though I've got a tenant in a bedroom saying he's going to keep the bedroom, stop paying rent, and he owns it now.

  • The system is designed in such a way that the residents get to make that decision. If they want to choose a non resident to represent them, they are allowed to do that.

In theory, an informed population should vote against this behaviour, but this particular riding will vote conservative until it kills them (which it's likely to do).
