  • Those people are mostly just a meme, I rarely see people actually doing that anymore, although I'm sure they exist. If you want my personality out of it, spend more time customizing. You can look into optimizations, theming, or delve into window managers if you really want to make it your own. There's a lot of options.

  • Its seriously absurd. I hate ads, but there's realistically not a better option to profit when providing free software and services like Mozilla is doing. Investing into ads that don't violate your privacy is a great decision. I don't know what the hell people want from them.

  • Floorp is an excellent browser. I mainly use it for the first class vertical tab support, but it's ability to pin websites to open in a sidebar is great. I use it for stuff like Proton mail and drive.

I will say in case anyone here saw it in the past, it had a bit of drama around the author making part of it closed source, but that was fortunately resolved before it was ever released with any proprietary code.

  • I've used Linux all through college and haven't had any problems. I never had to use Windows only software for my degree, but I can't really say what you might need. LibreOffice can mess up the formatting of more complex documents, but will normally be fine. If you're working in a group project and need to use shared docs you can always use Word or Google Docs online.

  • And that's how all package managers start. If it gets enough attention and enough people find the new capabilities of the package manager and distro interesting, it will get packages made for it.

  • It has no subscription, which is really suspicious. They're also using Llama3.1 iirc, not OpenAIs API. Obviously can't be certain, but it makes me suspicious of what they're doing with user data they collect. Especially considering the device is "always listening" according to them...

  • It does, but it seems to me like the blocking breaks somewhat often, since Twitch is always rolling out changes to bypass adblockers. Just tried it and it is blocking right now though!

  • What do you mean by won't work? chsh is not changing the shell of the entire OS, it's changing your users login shell. Unless you've done something to make your login break without bash, this is completely fine. Using chsh is even how the Fish docs recommend setting it as your default.

What Ubuntu did isnt about login shells, they replaced /bin/sh with dash, meaning any scripts that try to use sh will instead use dash.

  • This backend uses the Proton-API-Bridge, which is based on go-proton-api, a fork of the official repo.

According to that page there was an official API library, provided by Proton. They forked it and added features, it didn't need to be reverse engineered.

  • Samsung is garbage IMO, and OnePlus has been getting worse for years. Pixels offer the smoothest experience. Nothing phones are really nice too.

Wdym about the gifs? there should be nothing stopping you from sending those on any device.

Sideloading is possible, but there's more hoops to jump through than on Android. Plus an overall smaller amount of apps available to sideload.

Piracy depends on what you're pirating. TV/Movie wise you'll be fine, as well as ROMs for the few emulators iOS has (relative to android). I doubt you'll have any luck with apps or mobile games.

  • This is genuinely really cool. I worked IT at a school for a bit, and for anyone who doesn't know, having a good web filter is extremely important for legal reasons. The people in charge of implementing it can get into a lot of trouble if it's done improperly, hence why they always seem to block things so aggressively.

All of the current offering are complete garbage, with Lightspeed being the worst offender. An open source alternative could do a lot of good. I hope this kid is successful.
