  • I don't see how the copyright mechanism works here. The GPL has rules about linking to GPL code, enforced by the notion that the linked binary is a protected derivative work. Going and finding out where in memory some functions are and jumping to them is not going to create a derivative work.

The Linux devs just have a rule about who they want to call these symbols and are trying to enforce it themselves.

  • Why does Lemmy even ship its own image host? There are plenty of places to upload images you want to post that are already good at hosting images, arguably better than pictrs is for some applications. Running your own opens up whole categories of new problems like this that are inessential to running a federated link aggregator. People selfhost Lemmy and turn around and dump the images for "their" image host in S3 anyway.

We should all get out of the image hosting business unless we really want to be there.

  • It's not that uncommon to give a landlord a cupcake or something, especially if they live with/near you.

Also, landlords are often terrible so nobody wants to do nice things for them. And they are likely to be better off, not worse off, then their customers.

Tips aren't just percentages; people tip hotel cleaners, for example. And a percentage tip on a rent amount would be both unworkably huge and also offensively tiny.

  • It isn't enshitification in the sense of trying to make the platform make money, but it is throwing up new roadblocks in the way of using the platform. It makes it harder to just show up, register, and post code. It creates multiple tiers of users who have different privileges on the platform. And from here it would be easier to move to, with some of the same justifications, some sort of requirement to pay for code hosting.

  • My understanding is that Usenet providers are responsible for making sure they don't distribute any copyrighted content to you unless they have a license or some other exception to copyright applies.

  • I have some friends who seem to inform each other of things via Instagram.

I also get a lot of weird SMS/MMS messages that I think have been generated automatically by iMessage to try and map things it has to things actually in the spec.

  • Yeah but indoor CO2 levels have been above outdoor CO2 levels by way more than outdoor CO2 levels have risen. So unless it's some kind of weird thing where you have to hit a particular low level regularly to avoid the effect, it is hard to see the mechanism here.
